Ingredients- 4 handfuls of chestnuts (approx. 400-500g)
- 800ml water
- 1/2 Tbsp coarse salt
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The first step to delicious boiled chestnuts is thorough cleaning. Gently rinse the chestnuts under running water to remove any dirt or dust.
Step 2
Place the rinsed chestnuts in a large bowl. Add 1/2 tablespoon of coarse salt to the water. Soaking the chestnuts in saltwater not only helps to sterilize them but also effectively loosens any attached debris or impurities. Let them soak for about 20 minutes.
Step 3
After 20 minutes of soaking, examine the water. You’ll notice that dirt and impurities that were clinging to the chestnut skins have been loosened and are now visible at the bottom of the bowl. This saltwater soak is incredibly effective for cleaning.
Step 4
Drain the chestnuts and let them drip dry briefly in a colander. Here’s a special tip for effortlessly peeling your chestnuts! Using scissors, make a shallow ‘X’ cut on the rounded side of each chestnut. This small cut allows the skin to expand as it cooks, making it remarkably easy to peel after boiling. The cutting process is quite simple.
Step 5
Now, let’s boil the chestnuts. Pour 800ml of water into a pot and place a steamer rack (or trivet) inside. Arrange the prepared chestnuts evenly on the rack. Cover the pot with a lid and boil over medium heat for about 25 minutes. 25 minutes is sufficient time for the chestnuts to cook through perfectly.
Step 6
Once the chestnuts are nicely boiled, let them cool slightly. Then, gently press the area where you made the cut, and the skin will peel away surprisingly smoothly. Since these are the first chestnuts of the season, their taste is exceptional! Biting into a freshly peeled, bright yellow chestnut reveals a rich, nutty flavor and a comforting warmth – truly top-notch!
