Main Ingredients- 1 medium Onion
- 2 slices Butter
- A pinch of dried chili threads (optional, for garnish)
Braising Sauce- 1/3 cup Water (approx. 60ml)
- 1.5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Mirin (or cooking sake)
- 1 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or rice syrup)
- A pinch of Black Pepper
- 1/3 cup Water (approx. 60ml)
- 1.5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Mirin (or cooking sake)
- 1 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or rice syrup)
- A pinch of Black Pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all your ingredients before you begin. Wash the onion thoroughly.
Step 2
Keeping the root and stem ends intact, slice the onion horizontally into rings about 0.5cm thick. This helps the onion hold its shape as it cooks.
Step 3
Melt the 2 slices of butter in a pan over medium-low heat. Once the butter is melted, add the sliced onion rings. Sear them on both sides until they are lightly golden brown. Be careful not to overcook at this stage.
Step 4
Sear the onions just enough to coat them lightly with the buttery flavor, until they just begin to turn a pale golden color. This step is similar to searing a steak, adding depth of flavor.
Step 5
Gently push the onions to one side of the pan. Pour the 1/3 cup of water (approx. 60ml) into the empty space. Then, add the remaining sauce ingredients: 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp brown sugar, 0.5 Tbsp oyster sauce, 2 Tbsp mirin, and 1 Tbsp corn syrup. We’ll add the pepper at the end.
Step 6
Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat. As the sauce bubbles, use a spatula or spoon to baste the onions with the sauce. Continue to braise until the onions become translucent and the sauce reduces by about half, becoming syrupy. This should take approximately 5-7 minutes.
Step 7
Once the sauce has thickened nicely and coats the onions with a beautiful glaze, turn off the heat. Finish with a sprinkle of black pepper for an extra aroma. Your elegant Onion Steak is ready! For an added touch of visual appeal, garnish with dried chili threads if desired.
