Ingredients

  • 120g dried pasta
  • 25 mussels
  • 4 shrimp
  • 2 Korean green chili peppers (Cheongyang chili)

Seasoning

  • 1 packet (250g) store-bought cream spaghetti sauce
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or milk)
  • 1/4 cup white wine
  • A pinch of salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s start by preparing the mussels. Gently pull the beard-like threads from the mussels downwards and discard them. Then, rub the mussels against each other under running water to clean their shells thoroughly. For the shrimp, you can devein them if you prefer, or use them as is. I’ve left them whole for presentation, but for a cleaner eating experience at home, remove the heads and gently scrape out the black digestive tract from the back of the shrimp. To prevent the cream sauce from feeling too rich, it’s best to add a touch of spiciness with Korean green chilies or dried red chilies.

Step 1

Step 2

Finely chop the Korean green chili peppers. You can remove the seeds if you prefer less heat.

Step 2

Step 3

Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil, add a pinch of salt, and cook the pasta for about 9 minutes. Aim for an ‘al dente’ texture, meaning the pasta should still have a slight bite in the center. This is crucial because it will continue to cook in the sauce later, preventing it from becoming mushy.

Step 3

Step 4

In a saucepan or deep skillet, pour in the white wine. Add the prepared mussels and shrimp. Cover with a lid and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the alcohol from the wine has evaporated and the mussels have opened up, add the store-bought cream spaghetti sauce and the heavy cream (or milk). Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, add the chopped Korean green chili peppers. Their spicy kick will beautifully cut through the richness of the cream sauce, making the pasta even more delightful.

Step 6

Step 7

Quickly add the al dente pasta directly from the boiling water into the sauce. Toss everything together rapidly to ensure the pasta is well-coated with the sauce and the ingredients are evenly distributed. Once the sauce clings nicely to the pasta, remove from heat and serve immediately.
