Main Ingredients

  • 1 pack Tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300g)
  • 10-15 fresh mussels, cleaned
  • 1/6 head cabbage, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 sheets fish cakes (eomuk), cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 stalk green onion, sliced diagonally

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1-2 Tbsp Soy sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Corn syrup (or other liquid sweetener)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, thoroughly clean the mussels. Place them in boiling water and cook for about 5 minutes, until they open. Reserve the flavorful cooking liquid from the mussels; this will be the base for your tteokbokki sauce, adding a rich umami depth.

Step 1

Step 2

In a frying pan or pot, pour in the reserved mussel broth. Add all the prepared sauce ingredients (gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, corn syrup, and minced garlic). Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the sauce is boiling, add the tteokbokki rice cakes. Cook until the rice cakes are soft and chewy. When the rice cakes are almost cooked through, add the chopped cabbage and the white parts of the green onion. Allow them to cook until tender, infusing the sauce with their sweetness and aroma.

Step 3

Step 4

If desired, add the sliced fish cakes. They will absorb the delicious sauce and add a satisfying chewy texture to the dish.

Step 4

Step 5

When the rice cakes and vegetables are nearly done, carefully add the pre-cooked mussels and the hard-boiled eggs. (Optional: Add sliced red or green chili peppers for an extra kick of heat). Continue to simmer for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly. Turn off the heat to finish.

Step 5

Step 6

Voilà! Your delicious Mussel Tteokbokki is ready. For an attractive presentation, slice the hard-boiled eggs in half and place them on top. Doesn’t the vibrant color of the eggs and mussels make it look irresistible?

Step 6

Step 7

Enjoy your tteokbokki by savoring it with the plump mussels. The combination of the spicy-sweet sauce and the oceanic flavor of the mussels creates a truly spectacular harmony. Make your next meal special with this unique and delightful Mussel Tteokbokki!
