As your baby reaches 13 months, their world of food expands with exciting new tastes! You’ve probably been eager to introduce them to delicious flavors like Jjajang and curry. While store-bought baby food is convenient, why not try making a heartfelt curry yourself, just for your little one? Let’s embark on making a ‘Baby’s First Curry’ that’s cooked to a wonderfully soft texture with no added salt, ensuring it’s safe and healthy for your baby. We’ll guide you step-by-step with clear and friendly instructions. Make your baby’s first curry a delightful and nutritious experience!
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp Curry Powder (mild baby-specific recommended)
- 1 handful Minced Beef (approx. 30-40g)
- 1/4 Potato
- 1/4 Carrot
- 1/8 Onion
- Small amount of Zucchini (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare the fresh vegetables that will define the curry’s flavor! For baby curry, it’s common to use potatoes, carrots, and onions as a base. You can add zucchini for extra softness. It’s crucial to dice them into small, uniform pieces, about the size of a pinky nail, so your baby can chew them easily. Avoid dicing too finely, as it can turn into baby food consistency. Aim for about 0.5 cm cubes.
Step 2
To ensure good protein intake, prepare minced beef. About one handful (approximately 30-40g) of store-bought minced beef is suitable. If you’re mincing the meat yourself, make sure to chop it as finely as possible for your baby’s convenience. Using a similar quantity to the vegetables will ensure a good nutritional balance.
Step 3
Now, place the diced vegetables in a pot with plenty of water and let them simmer until very tender. The key is to cook them thoroughly until they are soft enough to be mashed with your baby’s gums. Cook them as you would other baby side dishes, ensuring they are so soft that they can be easily mashed with a fork. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
Step 4
Once the vegetables have reached the desired tenderness, add the minced beef and cook together. Stir gently with chopsticks to break up any clumps of meat and ensure it blends well with the vegetables. Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes until the beef is fully cooked.
Step 5
It’s finally time to add the curry flavor! Stir in 1 tablespoon of mild, baby-specific curry powder. Since babies are sensitive to salt and strong flavors, it’s important to adjust the amount to create a subtle curry aroma rather than an intense taste. Start with one tablespoon and adjust based on the consistency and flavor you desire. (Note: If using regular curry powder, be aware of its salt and spice content. It’s best to use baby-specific mild curry powder or a very small amount of regular curry powder.)
Step 6
After adding the curry powder, keep stirring continuously to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot. If it becomes too thick, add a little more water to reach the desired consistency. Conversely, if it’s too thin, simmer over low heat until it thickens slightly. (FYI: For products like ‘Curry Queen,’ we used only the curry powder itself, omitting the included apple & honey broth and cheese powder. For baby curry, it’s best to use pure powder without additives.) And there you have it – a smooth and delicious curry for your baby!
Step 7
Serve the homemade baby curry attractively over warm rice. For side dishes today, we’ve also prepared pickled cucumber and carrot from the fridge, and some meatballs that were rolled and cooked like dumplings. Serving it with other baby-friendly side dishes your child enjoys will make mealtime even more special. We hope your baby enjoys their first curry!
