Gluten-Free Teff Rice: A Healthy Homemade Meal
How to Make Nutritious Gluten-Free Teff Rice
This recipe introduces how to make a healthy homemade meal using teff, a grain native to Africa. Enjoy the soft texture and nutty flavor of teff rice, a perfect addition to your family’s diet.
Rice Cooking Ingredients- 4 cups white rice
- 5 Tbsp teff
- 500 ML water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by preparing 5 tablespoons of teff. Place the teff in a fine-mesh sieve. Gently shake the sieve to remove any impurities like husks or small stones. Since teff grains are very small, thorough inspection is important.
Step 2
Once impurities are removed, place the 5 tablespoons of teff (still in the sieve) into a bowl of cold water. Use a utensil, like a spoon or spatula, to gently stir the teff in the water. This method helps to wash away any residual dust or any slight bitterness inherent to teff, preventing the grains from clumping.
Step 3
After washing, allow the 5 tablespoons of teff to drain in the sieve for a moment, then soak it in clean water for 2 hours to fully hydrate. Soaking the teff beforehand makes the rice softer and easier to digest, which is a crucial step for the best texture.
Step 4
Rinse the 4 cups of white rice thoroughly. Drain the rice completely until no water remains. Place the drained rice in your rice cooker. Removing excess water ensures precise measurement of the cooking liquid later, which is vital for perfect rice texture.
Step 5
Add the soaked teff to the rice cooker along with the drained white rice. Pour in 500ml of water. Keep in mind that water ratios might differ slightly from regular rice, so you can adjust the water slightly based on your rice cooker model and the rice’s condition.
Step 6
Now, select the ‘cook’ or ‘rice’ setting on your rice cooker and let it cook. Once the cooking cycle is complete, you might notice the teff grains have settled at the bottom of the pot. Using a spatula, gently fluff the rice and teff together, being careful not to mash the grains. This ensures an even distribution of teff throughout the rice, creating a delicious and nutritious meal.
