Main Ingredients
  • 1 can of whelk (drain the liquid, use only the solids)
  • 2 servings of pre-packaged bibim-guksu (Korean spicy mixed noodles)
  • 1/2 cucumber (julienned)
  • 1/4 onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 red bell pepper (thinly sliced)
  • 2 boiled eggs (optional, for garnish)

Seasoning Sauce (Adjust to your taste)
  • Bibim-guksu sauce packet (for 2 servings)
  • 1 tsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, for extra spice)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil (for nutty aroma)
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds (for nutty flavor and texture)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, drain the liquid from the canned whelk using a sieve. Cut the whelk solids into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 pieces per whelk). This step helps remove excess oil for a cleaner taste.

Step 2

While the store-bought bibim-guksu sauce is delicious on its own, we’re going to enhance the flavor further. Add 1 teaspoon of gochugaru to the sauce packet for a bit more heat. Then, stir in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil to bring out a rich, nutty aroma. Finally, sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds for added flavor and texture. Your delicious bibim sauce is now complete! (Feel free to add a little sugar or vinegar if you prefer.)

Step 3

Prepare your fresh vegetables. Halve the cucumber, scoop out the seeds, and julienne it thinly. Thinly slice the onion, and similarly julienne the red bell pepper after removing the seeds. These fresh vegetables will add a delightful crunch to your dish.

Step 4

Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the bibim-guksu noodles according to the package instructions, usually about 3 minutes. Once cooked, immediately rinse the noodles under cold running water to make them firm and chewy. Rinsing in cold water prevents the noodles from becoming mushy and ensures a great texture.

Step 5

In a large bowl, add the drained noodles. Then, add the prepared whelk, julienned cucumber, onion, and red bell pepper. Pour the prepared bibim sauce over everything. Gently but thoroughly mix all the ingredients together, ensuring the sauce coats everything evenly. Be careful not to mix too vigorously, as this can break the noodles.

Step 6

Transfer the well-mixed Gol-bim-myeon to a serving bowl. For an optional touch, top with a halved boiled egg. Your visually appealing and incredibly delicious Gol-bim-myeon is now ready to be enjoyed! Serve chilled for the best experience.
