- 1 Tbsp Sugar (adjust to your preference)
- 2 Tbsp Butter (softened at room temperature)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce (regular soy sauce is fine)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar (adjust to your preference)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Before you begin making the tteokbokki, prepare 150g of tteokguk tteok (rice cakes for soup). Place the rice cakes in a bowl of cold water and let them soak for about 10-15 minutes. This softens the rice cakes, making them less chewy and better able to absorb the sauce during cooking. Once soaked, drain the rice cakes thoroughly in a colander.
Step 2
Prepare 5 cloves of garlic. Peel them and slice them thinly into rounds (mince them). If the garlic slices are too thick, they will take longer to cook, so aim for thin slices. If you’d like an even more intense garlic flavor, you can add 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic as well.
Step 3
Now it’s time to sauté the garlic. Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced garlic and cook slowly, stirring frequently, until it turns a light golden brown and releases a fragrant aroma. Be careful not to burn the garlic. This sautéed garlic will add a rich, savory garlic flavor to your tteokbokki. Set the cooked garlic aside for later.
Step 4
In the same pan, melt 2 Tbsp of butter over medium-low heat. Once the butter has melted, add the drained rice cakes and stir-fry. As the rice cakes begin to turn slightly translucent, add 1 Tbsp of sugar and 2 Tbsp of soy sauce. Continue to stir-fry until the sauce evenly coats the rice cakes. Make sure to keep stirring to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the pan.
Step 5
This is the final step! Transfer the finished garlic butter tteokbokki to a serving dish. Generously top with the golden sautéed garlic slices you set aside earlier. For an extra touch of visual appeal, sprinkle with a pinch of parsley flakes if desired. Enjoy your delicious and fragrant garlic butter tteokbokki!
