Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Soak the tteokbokki rice cakes in water for about 5 minutes to soften them. Drain the softened cakes well. This helps the cakes absorb the sauce better and achieve a chewier texture.
Step 2
Cut the square fish cakes into bite-sized triangles that pair well with the tteokbokki. Cutting them larger gives a better bite, while smaller pieces allow the sauce to penetrate more deeply.
Step 3
Onions are key to adding sweetness and depth to the tteokbokki. Peel and slice them into approximately 0.5cm thick strips. They will release a natural sweetness as they cook.
Step 4
Green onions add a fresh aroma and a pleasant crunch. Chop them into large, bite-sized pieces. Cutting them too thinly can make them mushy, so aim for about 1-1.5cm thickness for a better texture.
Step 5
Now, let’s make the delicious sauce! Pour 600ml of water into a pot. Add all the prepared sauce ingredients: chicken powder, curry powder, red pepper powder, gochujang, soy sauce, and sugar. Stir well with a spatula to dissolve all the seasonings in the water.
Step 6
Once the sauce comes to a boil, add the softened rice cakes and the cut fish cakes. Stir occasionally to ensure the cakes and fish cakes are evenly coated with the flavorful sauce.
Step 7
As the tteokbokki simmers and the sauce begins to thicken, add the sliced onions and the ramen noodles. Finally, add the chopped green onions. Continue to simmer until all ingredients are well combined and the sauce has reached your desired consistency. Cook for just a little longer after adding the green onions to preserve their fresh aroma before turning off the heat. Perfect!
Step 8
Your warm and delicious curry tteokbokki is ready! Transfer the steaming tteokbokki to a serving bowl. For an even more satisfying meal, consider adding toppings like cheese powder or a boiled egg.
