- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 can of Spam (Classic or Lite)
Seasoning & Sauce- 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp sugar
- Teriyaki sauce or steak sauce, to taste
- 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp sugar
- Teriyaki sauce or steak sauce, to taste
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the nori seaweed. If using sushi nori, cut it into long strips about 3 cm wide. You can adjust the width to your preference. Using crispy seasoned seaweed also works well for a different flavor.
Step 2
In a large bowl, add 3 bowls of warm cooked rice. Mix in 2 tablespoons of sesame oil and a pinch of salt. The salt enhances the overall flavor of the rice.
Step 3
Using a spatula or spoon, gently mix the rice so that the grains don’t break. Ensure the sesame oil and salt are evenly distributed, aiming for a glossy finish on each grain of rice.
Step 4
Open the can of Spam and remove the contents. Slice it into approximately 7 equal pieces, each about 1.5 cm to 2 cm thick. You can adjust the thickness as desired.
Step 5
We will reuse the Spam can. Line the inside of the Spam can generously with plastic wrap. Make sure the wrap adheres well to the inner surface; this will make it easier to shape the musubi later.
Step 6
In a frying pan, combine 3 tablespoons of water, 0.5 tablespoon of soy sauce, and 0.5 tablespoon of sugar. Mix well to create a teriyaki-style sauce. This sauce will add a delicious flavor to the Spam.
Step 7
Place the sliced Spam into the pan with the sauce over medium-low heat. Flip the Spam pieces regularly to ensure even cooking and prevent the sauce from burning or sticking.
Step 8
Brush a thin layer of steak sauce (or teriyaki sauce) onto the top surface of the Spam slices. Continue to cook until the Spam is nicely browned and cooked through. Well-cooked Spam has a richer flavor and better texture.
Step 9
Now it’s time to shape the musubi. Place the Spam can, which you lined with plastic wrap earlier, on a cutting board or work surface.
Step 10
Add a portion of the seasoned rice into the can. Press down firmly with a spoon or your hands to compact the rice and create a solid layer. Compacted rice prevents the musubi from falling apart.
Step 11
Place a cooked Spam slice on top of the rice layer. Press down firmly again to ensure the Spam and rice are well adhered. Pressing firmly is key to keeping the Spam in place.
Step 12
Finally, lay a piece of prepared nori seaweed lengthwise across the center of the Spam can. Then, flip the entire can, including the nori, onto your work surface.
Step 13
As you flip it, the contents (rice and Spam) will naturally slide out onto the cutting board, wrapped in the nori. To wrap the musubi tightly, use the plastic wrap to hold the nori snugly against the rice and Spam, shaping it firmly. The key is to wrap it tautly so the nori doesn’t come undone.
Step 14
Your delicious Spam Musubi is ready! Each bite offers a fantastic combination of savory Spam, flavorful rice, and seaweed. They are so delicious, you’ll likely find yourself eating 3-4 pieces effortlessly! ^^ Enjoy your mealtime with these simple yet special Spam Musubi!
