Heart-Shaped Spam Kimbap
Creating Unique Kimbap with Spam in a Heart Shape
If you’re tired of ordinary kimbap and looking for a way to make mealtime more special, try making heart-shaped spam kimbap! It’s perfect for celebratory occasions or adding a cute touch to your child’s lunchbox. With simple ingredients and a fun assembly process, anyone can make these delightful rolls. You don’t need an abundance of vegetables; just some savory spam is enough to create a charming and unique kimbap. Don’t worry if you don’t have spinach! The combination of flavorful spam and perfectly seasoned rice makes this an exceptional treat.
Kimbap Ingredients
- Kimbap seaweed sheets
- Warm cooked rice
- Spam (1/2 can)
- Sesame oil
- Salt
- Toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Cook the rice so it’s fluffy and not too sticky. Once the rice is warm, mix in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, a pinch of salt, and toasted sesame seeds. Remember, spam is quite salty, so adjust the amount of salt added to the rice according to your preference, or you can omit it entirely. Mixing well will infuse the rice with a lovely aroma.
Step 2
Slice the spam to fit the size of your kimbap. If you’re using a large can of spam, you can simply take out the amount you need for the kimbap rolls to make it more convenient.
Step 3
Pan-fry the sliced spam until it’s golden brown on both sides. This step enhances the spam’s flavor and gives it a pleasant texture. If you find the spam too salty, you can lightly blanch it in boiling water before frying to reduce the saltiness.
Step 4
Cut the kimbap seaweed sheets in half horizontally. Cutting them lengthwise will result in the perfect size for rolling the spam and rice.
Step 5
Now for the special heart-shape cut! Slice the spam diagonally on the side that will be attached to the kimbap roll. The angle of this diagonal cut is key to forming the heart shape, so try to make it neat. (Don’t worry if the shape isn’t perfect; the fun is in the making!)
Step 6
Place the two diagonally cut pieces of spam together so their cut surfaces meet. The angled edges should naturally form a heart shape. Even if it’s not a perfect heart, it will be a cute representation.
Step 7
Take about one-third of a cut seaweed sheet and wrap it around the spam. Using a full sheet would make the roll too long, so cutting the seaweed into thirds is ideal for wrapping the spam snugly.
Step 8
Carefully fill the inner curve of the heart-shaped spam with the seasoned rice. Be mindful not to overfill, as this can cause the kimbap to burst when rolled.
Step 9
Spread a thin layer of rice onto another piece of seaweed. Place the spam roll filled with rice onto this seaweed sheet and roll it up tightly, ensuring the filling stays in place.
Step 10
Slice the rolled kimbap into bite-sized pieces to reveal your adorable heart-shaped kimbap! For an even more pronounced heart shape, you can wrap the spam with a thin layer of seaweed first, then add the rice and roll the kimbap. This technique helps define the heart shape more clearly.
