  • 200g beef short rib meat (thinly sliced beef for bulgogi also works)

First, let’s prepare the ingredients that will add flavor to our Goulash. The 200g of beef short rib meat can be used directly from frozen. Since it will be cooked together with other ingredients in the rice cooker, there’s no need to thaw it separately. Let’s use it conveniently!

Next, chop the vegetables into bite-sized pieces. While some recipes use pork, today we’ll use beef to create a rich, beef stew-like Goulash. Prepare 4 button mushrooms, 1/2 onion, 1 medium potato, 1/3 carrot, 20g of garlic (about 1.5 Tbsp), and 15g of colorful bell pepper, cutting them into manageable sizes. As the vegetables cook, they will become tender and enhance the texture of the Goulash.

Now it’s time to put all the ingredients into the electric rice cooker. Start by placing the 200g of frozen beef short rib meat at the bottom of the cooker. The juices released from the meat will add a deep flavor to the Goulash.

To enhance the richness of the beef, add 10g (about 1 Tbsp) of vegetable margarine or butter. Some recipes suggest browning the meat in butter first, but cooking it together like this also yields delicious results. Also, add 10g (about 1 Tbsp) of all-purpose flour to help thicken the sauce. The flour will absorb the liquid released from the vegetables and meat, contributing to a luscious, thick sauce.

Add 30g (about 2 Tbsp) of ketchup and 50g (about 3.5 Tbsp) of tomato sauce for that signature sweet and tangy Goulash flavor. These two sauces will harmonize to create the Goulash’s distinct and appealing taste.

Pour in 5 Tbsp of chicken stock and 1 cup (200ml) of water for a deep and rich broth. If you find the flavor too intense, you might want to use only 4 Tbsp of chicken stock, so adjust the amount according to your preference. Prepare 150g of cherry tomatoes to add freshness and volume to the Goulash. Halving the cherry tomatoes before adding them allows them to soften and meld beautifully with the sauce as they cook. If you don’t have cherry tomatoes, you can use one large tomato, chopped.
