Let’s start by preparing the vegetables. Thoroughly wash the tomatoes under running water, then gently pat them dry with paper towels. Slice them into approximately 0.5cm thick rounds. Similarly, wash the romaine or lettuce leaves and ensure they are completely dry to prevent a soggy sandwich. Next, cook the bacon in a pan over medium-low heat until it’s nicely browned and crisp on both sides. If there’s excessive grease, you can carefully blot it with a paper towel. Cook the deli ham slices until golden brown, either in the same pan as the bacon or separately.

Now, let’s prepare the bread for our sandwich. Lightly toast the bread slices either in a grill or a dry frying pan until they are golden brown. The goal is a slightly crispy exterior while keeping the inside soft. Once toasted, spread a thin and even layer of cream cheese on one side of each bread slice. Cream cheese adds a wonderful depth of flavor and helps hold the ingredients together. (If you don’t have cream cheese, mayonnaise can be a good alternative.)

Arrange them neatly, ensuring they don’t stick out too much from the sides. After completing one layer, top it with another slice of bread spread with cream cheese. Continue assembling the next layer with ingredients, and finish by placing the final slice of bread on top. To ensure the sandwich holds its shape, place a heavy plate or cutting board on top and press down gently. This will help all the ingredients settle in place.
