Buns & Filling

  • 6 Morning Buns
  • 1 cup Cabbage (finely shredded)
  • 1/2 cup Canned Corn (drained)
  • 2 Frankfurt Sausages (sliced into appropriate size)
  • 2 slices Provolone or Mozzarella Cheese (sliced)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s start by preparing the filling for our sausage buns! First, wash the cabbage thoroughly and shred it as finely as possible. Finely shredding makes it easier for kids to eat, especially if they’re picky about vegetables. You can also add finely chopped onions, pickles, or even hard-boiled eggs for an extra layer of flavor and texture!

Step 1

Step 2

I’m using provolone cheese from my freezer, but feel free to use mozzarella for a milder taste, or even cheddar cheese if that’s what your kids prefer. Pre-slicing the cheese will make assembly much quicker.

Step 2

Step 3

In a large bowl, combine the finely shredded cabbage and the drained canned corn. Add the mayonnaise for creaminess and the sugar for a touch of sweetness. Mix everything together well to create a delightful vegetable salad. Taste and add a tiny pinch of salt if needed.

Step 3

Step 4

Carefully slice off the top third of each morning bun using a knife. Be gentle to avoid crumbling the bread and aim for a clean cut. Set the cut-off tops aside for now.

Step 4

Step 5

Using a knife or a spoon, carefully hollow out the inside of the bun. Gently scoop out the soft bread, being careful not to tear the sides or create a hole. This will create a perfect little pocket to hold your delicious filling.

Step 5

Step 6

Generously fill the hollowed-out morning buns with the prepared vegetable salad. Don’t overfill, just enough to pack it in nicely.

Step 6

Step 7

Top the salad-filled buns with the sliced sausages and cheese. This is the part your kids will especially love!

Step 7

Step 8

Now it’s time to cook! You can bake them in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 5-7 minutes, or microwave them for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until the cheese is nicely melted. Baking gives the bun a slight crispness and melts the cheese beautifully.

Step 8

Step 9

I opted for a quick microwave session for about 40 seconds to melt the cheese, followed by a brief stint in the air fryer at 170°C (340°F) for 3 minutes. This made the cheese golden and even more appealing. Feel free to choose your preferred cooking method!

Step 9

Step 10

The chewy texture of the sausage, the savory melted cheese, and the tangy vegetable salad create a flavor explosion that kids will adore! Your delicious sausage morning buns are ready to be devoured. They make a fantastic snack or even a simple breakfast option!
