Main Ingredients- 7 medium potatoes
- 2 medium onions
- 1 handful Vienna sausages
- 1 small can Spam
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s start by preparing the delicious sauce for our Jjageuli. In a bowl, combine 1.5 Tbsp Gochujang, 4 Tbsp Gochugaru, 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce, 0.5 Tbsp Doenjang, 1 Tbsp Sugar, 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic, and a pinch of black pepper. Mix everything well until evenly combined.
Step 2
Next, prepare the vegetables and sausages. Peel the potatoes and onions, then cut them into approximately 2cm (about 3/4 inch) cubes. Slice the Vienna sausages into bite-sized pieces as well.
Step 3
Here’s a special step to infuse the stew with Spam’s savory flavor! Place one small can of Spam into a plastic bag. Use your hands or the back of a knife to mash the Spam, breaking it into smaller pieces. Mashing the Spam will help it absorb the sauce better and enhance the overall flavor.
Step 4
Now, it’s time to bring all the ingredients together in a pot. Add the cubed potatoes, onions, and sliced Vienna sausages to a ttukbaegi (Korean earthenware pot) or a deep stew pot.
Step 5
Evenly distribute the mashed Spam over the ingredients in the pot. The salty flavor of the Spam will add depth to the Jjageuli broth.
Step 6
Time to add the water. Pour in enough water so that the ingredients are about halfway submerged, or just enough for a thick stew consistency. Be careful not to add too much water, as it can make the stew too diluted. Bring it to a boil over high heat.
Step 7
Once the water begins to boil, add all the prepared seasoning mixture. Stir to ensure the sauce dissolves evenly into the broth.
Step 8
Finally, add the sliced green onions for a fresh aroma and the chopped Korean green chilies for a touch of heat. Slice the green onions diagonally or chop them finely. If you prefer less spice, you can remove the seeds from the green chilies before chopping. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer vigorously for about 5 more minutes. Your delicious Spam and Potato Jjageuli is now ready!
