Homemade Canned Peaches
Sweet and Refreshing Canned Peaches, Perfect for Kids’ Snacks!
Even firm peaches that aren’t very sweet can become wonderfully delicious when canned at home. This recipe offers two delightful variations: one made with sugar and another with honey, adding a lovely depth of flavor. We’ve carefully prepared 12 peaches with sugar and the other 12 with honey from a total of 24 peaches. Enjoy this cool, summery treat made easily in your own kitchen.
Ingredients- 24 firm peaches
- 2 cups (approx. 400ml) honey
- 2 cups (approx. 400g) sugar
- Pinch of lemon powder (optional)
- 1 liter (1000ml) water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
For this canned peach recipe, it’s best to choose firm peaches. First, wash the peaches thoroughly and then peel them completely. We’ve opted to remove the skin to minimize concerns about pesticides, especially since this is for children, but you can leave the skin on if you prefer. Cut the peaches into bite-sized pieces, avoiding the pit (e.g., quarter or sixths).
Step 2
Let’s prepare the syrups for our two variations. For the sugar syrup: In a pot, combine 1 liter (1000ml) of water and 2 cups (approx. 400g) of sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. (Using brown sugar will result in a brown-colored syrup.) Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar based on your sweetness preference. For the honey syrup: Bring 1 liter (1000ml) of water to a rolling boil in a separate pot.
Step 3
Once the water is boiling vigorously, add the prepared peach pieces and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes. If your peaches are very firm, 10 minutes should be sufficient, but adjust the cooking time based on how ripe your peaches are. You can check for doneness by inserting a chopstick; it should slide in easily when the peaches are tender. Optionally, you can add a pinch of lemon powder for a touch of tartness and its potential antimicrobial benefits, which is especially nice for summer.
Step 4
The peaches cooked in the sugar syrup will turn translucent after about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, let them cool completely, and then transfer them to sterilized glass jars or airtight containers. Store them in the refrigerator and serve chilled. For the honey syrup, after boiling the peaches in water for about 10 minutes, turn off the heat and let it cool completely. Once cooled, stir in 2 cups (approx. 400ml) of honey. It’s crucial to add honey only after the mixture has cooled down, as high temperatures can degrade its beneficial nutrients, making it similar to plain sugar.
Step 5
Your delicious homemade canned peaches are ready! Even children who are picky about eating fruit will love these. Stored in the refrigerator and served cold, they make the perfect snack on a hot summer day. Their soft texture also makes them an excellent dessert for elderly individuals with delicate teeth. Plus, you get all the goodness of peaches!
Step 6
These canned peaches retain a pleasant, slightly firm texture, not mushy, even after being cooked. The sweetness makes them delightful to eat, and they’re subtly addictive! They are also very convenient for children, as they can serve themselves without needing them to be peeled first. The sweet, refreshing syrup is wonderful to enjoy alongside the fruit, making this a perfect way to beat the summer heat. They also make a thoughtful gift for parents.
Step 7
Pairing these canned peaches with a hearty potato pancake (gamjachajeon) creates a satisfying snack option. While ice cream and sugary drinks offer temporary sweetness, consider gifting your children coolness and health with the nutritious and delicious gamjachajeon and canned peaches. Let’s overcome the heatwave and stay healthy together with good food!
