Homemade Red Bean Bingsu (Patbingsu)
How to Make Delicious Red Bean Bingsu at Home Easily
Beat the heat with the ultimate summer treat! I’ll show you how to make a refreshing and sweet red bean bingsu at home that rivals any cafe’s. The key to this recipe is preparing all your ingredients in advance. I learned this from a friend and I’m excited to share the detailed steps with you, making it easy for anyone to follow. Let’s get started!
Bingsu Ingredients- 1-2 cups cooked red beans (sweetened)
- 2-3 cups shaved ice (milk ice or regular ice)
- 1 cup diced watermelon
- 1/2 cup fruit cocktail (canned)
- Sweetened condensed milk, to taste
- 1/2 cup cold milk
- 2-3 Tbsp misugaru (roasted grain powder)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the watermelon thoroughly and dice it into bite-sized cubes. This adds a refreshing sweetness and beautiful color to your bingsu. Feel free to add other favorite fruits at this stage as well.
Step 2
Prepare the ice, the heart of bingsu! If you have an ice shaver or blender, shave the ice finely. If not, a great alternative is to spread a thin layer of milk in a resealable bag, freeze it, and then break it into small pieces when you’re ready to make the bingsu. Milk ice creates a wonderfully soft texture that melts beautifully.
Step 3
Let’s prepare the sweet red beans. Rinse the cooked red beans well. If using dried red beans, you’ll need to cook them until tender. A good method is to boil them in water for about 20 minutes in a pressure cooker, then stir in sugar and cook further until thickened, or mix sugar with pre-cooked beans and simmer. Once your ice is shaved or crushed, mound it generously in a serving bowl and top with a good portion of the prepared sweet red beans.
Step 4
Now it’s time to add more delightful toppings! Spoon the sweet and colorful fruit cocktail over the red beans. Arrange the diced watermelon cubes attractively on top. You can customize this part by adding other fruits like kiwi, strawberries, or mango based on your preference and what’s in season.
Step 5
Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk generously over the entire bingsu. Adjust the amount according to your sweetness preference – a little goes a long way! This adds a rich, creamy sweetness.
Step 6
Pour in the cold milk. This helps to meld all the flavors together and adds a smooth, milky base to your bingsu, keeping it refreshingly cold.
Step 7
Finally, sprinkle the misugaru (roasted grain powder) over the top. This adds a nutty, wholesome flavor. For an extra chewy texture, consider adding small pieces of injeolmi (Korean rice cake) or glutinous rice cake.
Step 8
And there you have it! Your beautiful, homemade red bean bingsu is ready to be enjoyed. Serve it in individual bowls and share this delightful, cooling dessert with your loved ones. Enjoy your delicious creation!
