Key Ingredients

  • 4 ripe tomatoes
  • 200g granulated sugar (or unrefined sugar)
  • 1/2 fresh lemon

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Make shallow cross-shaped cuts on the bottom of each tomato (opposite the stem). This scoring will help in peeling the skin easily.

Step 1

Step 2

Blanch the scored tomatoes in boiling water for about 2 minutes. This step loosens the skins, allowing for easy removal. After blanching, transfer them to cold water to cool, then peel off the skins.

Step 2

Step 3

Remove the tough core from the peeled tomatoes. Cut them into bite-sized pieces. If there are too many seeds, you can remove some at this stage.

Step 3

Step 4

Combine the prepared tomatoes and sugar in a pot. Start cooking over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally with a spatula as the tomatoes break down and the sugar dissolves, thickening into a jam consistency. Cook for approximately 20 minutes. It’s crucial to stir regularly to prevent the jam from sticking to the bottom and burning.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the jam has thickened nicely, squeeze in the juice of half a lemon. Lemon juice adds a refreshing tanginess and helps preserve the jam. Simmer for a few more minutes after adding the lemon juice to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, prepare your glass jars by sterilizing them in boiling water and ensuring they are completely dry. Carefully ladle the hot tomato jam into the sterilized jars and seal them tightly. Once cooled, store in the refrigerator. It will keep well for about a month. Enjoy this delicious homemade jam spread generously on warm toast!
