Homemade Stir-Fried Gochujang (Spicy Red Pepper Paste)
Amazing Stir-Fried Gochujang from Baek Jong-won’s Recipe – Elevate Your Home Cooking!
Last Tuesday’s episode of ‘Mr. Baek: The House Husband’ left our mouths watering with the introduction of a fantastic stir-fried gochujang recipe, following up on the popular all-purpose soy sauce. This recipe is a game-changer for adding incredible depth and flavor to any dish.
Key Ingredients- 1 cup cooking oil
- 3 cups onion (finely chopped)
- 1 cup green onion (finely chopped)
- 1 cup ground pork
- 0.5 cup minced garlic
- 0.5 cup sugar
- 2 cups gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
- 2-3 Tbsp soy sauce
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Pour 1 cup of cooking oil into a coated, deep pan. Using a non-stick pan is highly recommended, as it prevents the paste from sticking later and makes cleanup much easier.
Step 2
Finely chop 1 cup of green onions and 3 cups of onions. Chopping the ingredients as finely as possible ensures the paste mixes evenly and results in a smoother texture.
Step 3
Add 0.5 cup of minced garlic and 1 cup of ground pork to the pan. Sauté over medium heat until the moisture from the onions has evaporated and the pork has released some of its oil.
Step 4
While sautéing, break up the ground pork with a spatula or spoon to prevent it from clumping. Cooking the pork until it’s crumbly will help it absorb the flavors better.
Step 5
Once the pork has rendered enough oil, add 0.5 cup of sugar and continue to stir-fry. The sugar will dissolve and balance the flavors of the ingredients.
Step 6
Now, pour 2-3 Tbsp of soy sauce around the edges of the pan. Letting the soy sauce caramelize slightly from the heat will add a deeper, richer flavor. (Caution: Monitor the heat to prevent burning.)
Step 7
When the ingredients start to turn a deep brown color, add the 2 cups of gochujang. Reduce the heat to low.
Step 8
Stir continuously over low heat for about 10 minutes, ensuring the gochujang doesn’t burn. Once the paste is well combined with the other ingredients and has thickened to your desired consistency, your delicious stir-fried gochujang is ready! Let it cool completely before storing it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
