Tiramisu Components
  • 3 sheets of store-bought vanilla sponge cake (you can slice them thinly to create 4 layers if you prefer)
  • 250g cream cheese (softened at room temperature)
  • 150g heavy cream (chilled)
  • 20g granulated sugar (for whipping cream)

Coffee Syrup
  • 1 stick of instant coffee mix (dissolve in a very small amount of hot water to create a strong brew, then let it cool)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the base of your tiramisu. Slice the store-bought vanilla sponge cake sheets into your desired thickness using a knife or serrated knife. Slicing them into 3 or even 4 thinner layers will result in a more moist and tender tiramisu.

Step 2

Now, let’s make the luscious cream! In a chilled bowl, combine the heavy cream and 20g of granulated sugar. Whip using an electric mixer or a whisk until soft peaks form – meaning the cream holds its shape but the peaks gently curl over. Be careful not to over-whip, as this can lead to a less smooth texture.

Step 3

Prepare the coffee syrup by dissolving one stick of instant coffee mix in a very small amount of hot water. This creates a concentrated coffee flavor. While the syrup cools, ensure your cream cheese is softened at room temperature and whip it until smooth. Now it’s time to assemble! Place the bottom layer of vanilla sponge cake on your serving plate or in your dish. Brush it generously with the cooled coffee syrup. (For a less soggy texture, I personally prefer to lightly brush it, so feel free to adjust to your liking.) Spread a generous layer of the whipped cream mixture over the syrup-soaked cake. Repeat the layers: vanilla cake, coffee syrup, and cream. Finish with a final layer of cream on top.

Step 4

Smooth the top layer of cream using a spatula for an even surface. Cover the tiramisu and refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours, or until firmly set. Chilling allows the flavors to meld together and the structure to firm up, enhancing the overall taste and texture.

Step 5

Once chilled and set, it’s time for the final touch! Lightly dust the top with powdered sugar using a sieve. Then, generously sift cocoa powder over the powdered sugar for that classic, beautiful tiramisu finish. Slice and enjoy your delicious homemade tiramisu!
