How to Make Mulled Wine (Vin Chaud): A Soothing Drink for Cold Season

I’ve often made mulled wine with leftover red wine, but after seeing Choi Ji-woo on ‘Coffee Friends’ add tangerines, I decided to try it with ingredients I had on hand. It’s especially comforting on a chilly winter day, and since it’s perfect for any cold weather, I’m sharing this post. It’s a wonderful way to warm up your home with this delightful beverage.

Ingredients

  • 2 bottles Red Wine (750ml each)
  • 3 Apples
  • 6 Tangerines
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • Sugar (to taste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by preparing all your ingredients.

Step 1

Step 2

Wash the apples and tangerines thoroughly under running water. For a deep clean, you can soak them briefly in a mixture of water with a splash of vinegar and baking soda to remove any residue or wax from the skins. Rinse the cinnamon stick as well.

Step 2

Step 3

Slice the thoroughly washed tangerines. You can leave the peel on for extra flavor, but if you prefer a less bitter taste, you can peel them before slicing.

Step 3

Step 4

Core the apples and cut them into bite-sized pieces. You can quarter them or cut them into eighths, depending on your preference.

Step 4

Step 5

Place the prepared apple slices, tangerine slices, and the cinnamon stick into a large, deep pot. While optional, adding lemon slices or a few cloves can enhance the aroma and flavor profile of your mulled wine.

Step 5

Step 6

Pour both bottles of red wine into the pot with the fruits and spices. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Once it starts to bubble, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully. We didn’t add sugar initially, but you can add it according to your sweetness preference. It’s best to taste and adjust as needed.

Step 6

Step 7

Serve the warm mulled wine in mugs, perhaps with an extra cinnamon stick. It’s a wonderfully warming drink that comforts the entire body. For an extra treat, you can even serve it with dried pineapple slices or the cooked fruit from the pot. Enjoy this cozy beverage!
