Jjimjilbang Style “Stone-Baked” Eggs
How to Make Jjimjilbang-Style Stone-Baked Eggs Using a Rice Cooker
Learn the simple secret to recreating the beloved jjimjilbang (Korean spa) style stone-baked eggs right in your own kitchen using just a rice cooker. These eggs boast a wonderfully chewy texture on the outside and a perfectly tender, flavorful interior, making them an ideal snack.
Ingredients- About 10 fresh eggs (bring to room temperature beforehand)
- 1 Tbsp vinegar (for washing eggshells)
- 1 Tbsp coarse salt (for seasoning and softening shells)
- 1 cup water (for the rice cooker)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, take your eggs out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes before you plan to cook them to bring them to room temperature. This helps prevent the eggs from cracking during the cooking process. In a bowl, pour about 1 cup of water and add 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Gently place the eggs in this solution and lightly scrub their shells to clean them without causing damage.
Step 2
Carefully place the cleaned eggs into the inner pot of your rice cooker. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of coarse salt evenly over the eggs. The coarse salt helps to lightly cook the shell, giving it a chewy texture, and seasons the eggs subtly from the outside.
Step 3
Now, add 1 cup of water to the rice cooker pot (enough to mostly cover the eggs). Close the lid and press the ‘Cook’ button. Use the standard white rice cooking function. Your rice cooker will work its magic to create delicious stone-baked eggs!
Step 4
Once the cooking cycle is complete, allow the steam to release naturally from the rice cooker. If you desire a darker color and an even chewier texture, you can optionally run the ‘Cook’ cycle one more time. You may need to add a little more water if you do this, or simply let it sit undisturbed after the first cycle finishes.
Step 5
Voila! With just your rice cooker, you’ve successfully made chewy and flavorful jjimjilbang-style stone-baked eggs. Be careful as they will be hot. Let them cool slightly before peeling and enjoying this unique treat. You’ll love the delightful contrast between the slightly firm exterior and the moist, tender yolk inside!
