Ingredients

  • Beef for Bulgogi, 200g
  • Crown Daisy (Chamnamul), a little
  • Tofu, 2/3 block (approx. 200g)
  • Whole Garlic, 3 cloves
  • Cooking Oil, as needed
  • Green Onion, 1 stalk
  • Salt, a pinch

Bulgogi Marinade

  • Soy Sauce, 4 Tbsp
  • Sugar, 2 Tbsp
  • Minced Garlic, 1 Tbsp
  • Black Pepper, a little
  • Sesame Oil, 1 Tbsp
  • Sesame Seeds, a little

Dressing Sauce

  • Bulgogi Marinade (reserved), 1 Tbsp
  • Mirin (Rice Wine), 1 Tbsp
  • Water, 2 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the bulgogi marinade. In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, a pinch of black pepper, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, and a little sesame seeds. Mix them well. Set this mixture aside for now.

Place the 200g of beef for bulgogi in a bowl. Add the prepared bulgogi marinade and mix gently to coat the meat. Let it marinate for at least 10 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the beef. Important tip: reserve about 1 Tbsp of the marinade; this will be used for the dressing sauce.

Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the 3 whole garlic cloves, thinly sliced, and sauté them until lightly golden brown. Once browned, carefully remove the garlic from the pan and set aside. These fried garlic slices will be a delicious topping for your rice bowl.

Slice the 2/3 block of tofu into roughly 1.5cm thick pieces. Pat the tofu slices dry with paper towels; this helps them achieve a crispier texture when fried. Add a little cooking oil to the pan and fry the tofu slices on both sides until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. Lightly sprinkle a pinch of salt over the fried tofu for seasoning.

Now, it’s time to cook the bulgogi. In the same pan (or a clean one if preferred), add the marinated beef. Toss in the chopped green onion (1 stalk) and stir-fry over high heat quickly. Be careful not to burn the meat. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the beef is cooked through.

Pour the reserved bulgogi marinade back into the pan with the cooked beef. Add the ingredients for the dressing sauce: 1 Tbsp of the reserved bulgogi marinade, 1 Tbsp mirin, and 2 Tbsp water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. This creates the flavorful sauce that makes the bulgogi rice bowl so delicious.

All components are ready! Spoon warm cooked rice into a serving bowl. Arrange the golden-brown fried tofu slices on top of the rice. Next, generously add the washed crown daisy (chamnamul). Place the cooked bulgogi and the sautéed garlic slices over the chamnamul. Finally, drizzle the thickened bulgogi dressing sauce evenly over everything.
