Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, gently press the ground beef with paper towels to remove any excess blood. Then, in a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/3 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, and 1 Tbsp cooking wine. Mix well to marinate the beef. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 20 minutes; this will help tenderize the meat.
Step 2
Next, prepare the gochujang sauce by mixing 6 Tbsp gochujang, 3 Tbsp sugar, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil in a separate bowl. Mixing these in advance will make the cooking process smoother.
Step 3
Finely chop about a bunch of scallions. The fragrant scallions will add depth to the flavor of the gochujang paste.
Step 4
Finely chop 1/4 onion, just like the scallions. The sweetness of the onion will beautifully complement the gochujang, enhancing the overall savory taste.
Step 5
Heat a pan over medium heat and add a suitable amount of vegetable oil. First, add the chopped onions and scallions and sauté until fragrant. Cooking them over low heat can bring out even more flavor.
Step 6
Once the scallions turn a vibrant green and the onions become translucent, add the marinated ground beef and stir-fry everything together. It’s best to cook this over medium heat rather than high heat.
Step 7
It’s important to break up the beef with a spatula or spoon as it cooks to prevent it from clumping. Be careful not to let the beef burn.
Step 8
When the beef has lost its pink color and turned a savory brown, add all the pre-mixed gochujang sauce to the pan.
Step 9
Thoroughly combine the gochujang sauce with the beef and vegetables. Stir and cook gently, allowing the sauce to simmer and thicken slightly without burning. This will create a delicious yakgochujang.
Step 10
Continue to cook until the gochujang paste loses its slightly raw or heavy taste and develops a deep, rich flavor. Finish by sprinkling in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil and a generous pinch of sesame seeds for added nuttiness.
Step 11
Assemble your bibimbap by topping a bowl of warm rice with your chosen toppings like fresh bean sprouts, a sunny-side-up egg, and soft tofu. Then, generously dollop this homemade beef gochujang paste over everything and mix well! You’ll experience a magical flavor that will awaken your appetite.
