Mandu Eomuk Guk (Dumpling Fish Cake Soup): A Heartwarming and Easy New Year’s Dish
A Delicious and Easy-to-Make Dumpling Fish Cake Soup for the New Year
This is a quick and easy Mandu Eomuk Guk recipe. Perfect for a comforting meal.
Main Ingredients- 3 dumplings (use your favorite kind)
- 200g fish cakes (about 2 sheets, typically square)
- 1/2 onion
- 1/2 green onion
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare the dumplings. You can use frozen dumplings directly or homemade ones according to your preference. While 3 dumplings are listed, feel free to add more if you enjoy them!
Step 2
Peel and thinly slice the 1/2 onion into strips. Sautéing the onion first can bring out its natural sweetness, adding a depth of flavor to the broth.
Step 3
Wash and thinly slice the 1/2 green onion diagonally. Separating the white and green parts can offer a slightly different flavor profile and visual appeal.
Step 4
Cut the 200g of fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm in length. Avoid cutting them too small, as they might break apart during cooking.
Step 5
In a pot, combine the 500ml of water, sliced onions, and diagonal green onions. Bring this mixture to a boil over high heat. Simmering the aromatics first helps to build a richer flavor base for the soup.
Step 6
Once the water is boiling vigorously, add the prepared fish cakes and dumplings. Then, stir in the 2 Tbsp of Korean soy sauce and 2 Tbsp of bonito soup stock to season. If you don’t have bonito soup stock, regular soy sauce or kelp soy sauce can be used as a substitute. Continue to simmer for another 2-3 minutes until the dumplings and fish cakes are cooked through. Your delicious Mandu Eomuk Guk is ready!
