Ingredients

  • Oatmeal, 4-5 Tbsp
  • Water, 4 Tbsp
  • 1 large Egg
  • Salt, a pinch (to taste)
  • Dried Laver Flakes (Gimjaban), 10g
  • Sesame Oil, 1/2 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Take a microwave-safe bowl of appropriate size. Generously spoon 4-5 tablespoons of oatmeal into the bowl. (One tablespoon should be a heaping spoonful).

Step 1

Step 2

Carefully crack 1 egg into the bowl. Use the back of a spoon to gently break the yolk, then stir well to thoroughly combine the egg with the oatmeal, ensuring there are no clumps. It should mix to a creamy consistency, similar to risotto.

Step 2

Step 3

Season with salt. If you have a pink salt grinder, grind it over the mixture 4-5 times. Alternatively, take a small pinch of fine salt and sprinkle it evenly. Since dried laver flakes are already seasoned, it’s best to start with a small amount of salt. You can always add more later after tasting.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, add 4 tablespoons of water. Oatmeal absorbs water to soften, so you can adjust the water amount to achieve your desired texture. If you prefer a firmer, more rice-like consistency, you can slightly reduce the water.

Step 4

Step 5

Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid, or if you don’t have one, cover it with plastic wrap, ensuring you leave a small vent or poke a few holes in the wrap. This allows steam to escape.

Step 5

Step 6

Microwave for 2 minutes and 30 seconds to 3 minutes. The cooking time may vary slightly depending on the type of oatmeal and your microwave’s power. Check the consistency after the initial time, and if needed, microwave for additional 30-second intervals.

Step 6

Step 7

Once out of the microwave, drizzle 1/2 tablespoon of fragrant sesame oil over the oatmeal egg rice. The sesame oil will enhance the aroma and flavor as it mingles with the warm oatmeal.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, generously sprinkle a good amount of crispy and savory dried laver flakes (Gimjaban) over the top. Stir everything together with a spoon to combine. Your delicious Oatmeal Egg Rice is now ready to enjoy! For an extra touch, you can sprinkle some sesame seeds on top.
