Main Ingredients

  • 350g gara-tteok (rice cakes, thawed if frozen)
  • 70g Vienna sausages
  • 1/2 onion
  • 5 strips bacon
  • 1/2 green onion stalk
  • 1 small Cheongyang chili pepper (optional for kids)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (200ml)
  • 1 cup milk (200ml)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1.5 slices processed cheese
  • Pinch of salt
  • Black pepper (to taste)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

If using frozen rice cakes, thaw them beforehand. Cut the thawed gara-tteok into bite-sized pieces. (Regular tteokbokki rice cakes or wheat cakes can also be used.)

Step 1

Step 2

Rinse the Vienna sausages under hot water to remove excess oil. Peel and thinly slice the onion. Cut the bacon into desired pieces.

Step 2

Step 3

Finely chop the green onion. If you enjoy a bit of heat or are making this for adults, finely mince the Cheongyang chili pepper. (If serving to children who don’t eat spicy food, omit the chili pepper or prepare it separately.)

Step 3

Step 4

In a large bowl, combine the heavy cream and milk. Add the egg yolk and whisk gently until well combined to create the cream sauce base.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onion and bacon and sauté until the onion becomes translucent and the bacon is lightly browned. Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds to 1 minute. A grind of black pepper at this stage enhances the aroma.

Step 5

Step 6

Pour the prepared cream, milk, and egg yolk mixture over the sautéed ingredients in the pan. Simmer gently over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 6

Step 7

Once the sauce begins to simmer, add the prepared rice cakes and Vienna sausages. Continue to cook, stirring frequently to prevent the rice cakes from sticking together, until the rice cakes are soft and tender.

Step 7

Step 8

When the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has reduced to your desired consistency, add the chopped green onions and Cheongyang chili pepper (if using). Simmer for another minute or two. Finally, place the processed cheese slices on top and let them melt. Season with salt and pepper to taste for a delicious Carbonara Tteokbokki!
