Tteokkochi Ingredients
  • 1 pack brown rice tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300-400g)
  • 2-3 Tbsp healthy cooking oil of your choice (avocado oil, brown rice oil, olive oil, etc.)

Sweet & Spicy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 3 Tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1 Tbsp chili sauce
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp jocheong (corn syrup, or oligodang/honey)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add about 2-3 tablespoons of your chosen healthy cooking oil, ensuring it coats the pan evenly.

Step 2

Place the tteokbokki rice cakes in the heated pan. If your rice cakes are very hard, you can soften them by briefly blanching them in boiling water before pan-frying. Cook the rice cakes, flipping them occasionally, until they are golden brown and wonderfully chewy. A slightly crisp exterior will enhance the taste.

Step 3

In a small bowl, combine 1 Tbsp gochujang, 3 Tbsp tomato sauce, 1 Tbsp chili sauce, 1 tsp minced garlic, and 1 Tbsp jocheong (or oligodang/honey). Mix thoroughly to create the delicious sauce. Having the sauce ready beforehand makes it easy to coat the tteok quickly after frying. For a thicker sauce, you can simmer it gently in the pan over low heat until it reaches your desired consistency.

Step 4

Once the rice cakes are nicely fried, push them to one side of the pan or transfer them to a plate. Brush the prepared sauce generously onto both sides of the tteok. Return the sauced tteok to the pan and cook over low heat for about 1 minute more. This will allow the sauce to meld with the tteok, creating a glossy and flavorful finish. Be careful not to burn them; just a brief cook is perfect.
