Main Ingredients- 300g Tofu (firm or regular)
- 200g Canned Tuna (drained, low-oil variety recommended)
- A small amount of Green Onion or Scallions, finely chopped
- 2 Large Eggs
Seasoning & Other Ingredients- 0.5 Tbsp Salt
- A pinch of Black Pepper
- 4 Tbsp Pancake Mix (or tempura flour)
- 0.5 Tbsp Salt
- A pinch of Black Pepper
- 4 Tbsp Pancake Mix (or tempura flour)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the tofu. It’s important to remove excess water from the tofu. You can press it with paper towels to absorb moisture, or wrap it in cheesecloth and place a weight on top for a while. If the tofu is too wet, the mixture might become too sticky and difficult to shape.
Step 2
Drain most of the oil from the canned tuna. Excess oil can make the steaks greasy. In a bowl, combine the pressed tofu, drained tuna, chopped green onions, 2 eggs, 0.5 Tbsp salt, a pinch of pepper, and 4 Tbsp of pancake mix. The pancake mix helps bind the ingredients together and adds a slight crispiness when cooked.
Step 3
Mix all the ingredients thoroughly using a spatula or your hands until well combined. It’s important to knead the mixture slightly to ensure everything is evenly incorporated. This ensures a consistent flavor and texture throughout the steaks.
Step 4
Once the mixture is ready, shape it into round, flattened patties. This recipe yields about 8 patties. You can cook 2 immediately and freeze the remaining 6 for later. To freeze, place them on parchment paper or paper towels, ensuring they don’t touch, and then store them in a freezer bag once frozen solid. This makes for a convenient meal prep option.
Step 5
Heat a frying pan with a generous amount of cooking oil over medium-low heat. Place the shaped tofu tuna patties in the pan and cook until golden brown on one side. Once browned, flip them over and cook the other side until equally golden and the inside is cooked through. Adjust the heat as needed to ensure they cook completely without burning. You’ll have delicious Tofu Tuna Steaks with a crispy exterior and a tender interior. Serve with your favorite sauce like ketchup or chili sauce for an extra flavor boost.
