Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 block firm tofu (approx. 150-200g)
  • 4 Vienna sausages
  • 20g carrot (finely minced)
  • 20g onion (finely minced)
  • 10g chives or green onions (finely minced)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (approx. 100g)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp potato starch or cornstarch

Seasoning & Garnish

  • Pinch of salt (approx. 1/4 tsp)
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Ketchup or mustard to taste

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, drain the tofu thoroughly by pressing it with paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth. For even better results, you can lightly pan-fry the tofu to remove excess moisture. Finely mince the carrot, onion, and chives so they are easy for children to eat. Gently squeeze out any excess liquid from the minced vegetables as well.

Step 1

Step 2

In a bowl, combine the drained tofu, minced vegetables, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of pepper. Mash and mix everything together with your hands until it forms a cohesive mixture. Kneading the mixture well is key to ensuring it holds its shape.

Step 2

Step 3

To help the tofu mixture bind better and for the coating to adhere well, add 1 tablespoon of starch (potato or cornstarch) and mix thoroughly. The starch will improve the texture and contribute to a crispier finish.

Step 3

Step 4

Briefly blanch the Vienna sausages in boiling water to remove excess oil. Lightly coat the blanched sausages with a little starch. This step helps the tofu mixture stick more effectively to the sausages.

Step 4

Step 5

Traditionally, hot dogs are made by inserting a skewer into the sausage and then wrapping the tofu mixture around it. However, for easier frying, you can omit the skewer and simply shape the tofu mixture into balls or logs around the sausages. (If using skewers, insert them into the sausages now.)

Step 5

Step 6

Prepare the egg wash by cracking one egg into a shallow bowl and whisking it well. Dip each tofu-wrapped sausage into the egg wash, ensuring it is fully coated.

Step 6

Step 7

Next, generously coat the egg-washed tofu hot dogs with breadcrumbs. Make sure the breadcrumbs cover the surface completely and evenly. This will create a wonderfully crispy and golden-brown crust when fried.

Step 7

Step 8

Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a deep pan or pot to around 170-180°C (340-350°F). Carefully place the breaded tofu hot dogs into the hot oil. Be cautious not to overcrowd the pan. Frying at too low a temperature will result in oily hot dogs.

Step 8

Step 9

The tofu hot dogs will begin to turn golden brown in the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until the exterior is golden and crispy. Since the inner ingredients (sausages and vegetables) are already cooked, you just need to ensure the breadcrumb coating is nicely browned. Avoid over-frying.

Step 9

Step 10

Once golden and crispy, remove the tofu hot dogs from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil. If you used skewers, insert them now. Serve immediately with ketchup or mustard for a delicious and healthy treat! For easier skewer insertion at the end, use skewers with pointed tips. Enjoy your homemade tofu hot dogs!
