  • 5 skewers

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Hello everyone! Today, we’re making a super popular fruit candy called Tanghulu, perfect for a kids’ snack. It features a delightful crunchy coating and a fresh, juicy interior. Making it at home is surprisingly easy! I’ll show you how to achieve that perfect crispiness without any corn syrup or oligosaccharide.

Step 1

Step 2

First, let’s prepare the strawberries. Gently remove the stems from all the strawberries. Then, soak them in water with a teaspoon of white vinegar for about 1 minute. This helps to clean them thoroughly. After soaking, rinse them gently under running water several times.

Step 2

Step 3

Crucially, ensure the strawberries are completely dry after washing. Pat them dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. If there’s any residual moisture, the sugar coating won’t harden properly and might turn sticky. Once dry, thread 3-4 strawberries onto each skewer.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, let’s make the sugar syrup. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio. (Today, I had fewer strawberries left after making a strawberry cream sandwich, so I used half a cup of water and half a cup of sugar.) If you have more strawberries, you can scale up the ingredients while maintaining the same 1:1 ratio.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat the sugar and water mixture over medium heat. Once it starts to boil and large bubbles form, reduce the heat to low. Carefully dip each strawberry skewer into the syrup, swirling gently to coat all sides evenly. You can use chopsticks to help rotate the skewer for a complete coating.

Step 5

Step 6

After coating the strawberries with syrup, let them sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. During this time, the sugar coating will harden into a beautiful, crisp candy shell. The result is a delightful treat where you get a satisfying crunch from the outside and the fresh, sweet burst of strawberry from the inside. Enjoy your homemade fruit candy Tanghulu!
