- Pinch of Black Pepper
- 1/4 Onion, thinly sliced
- Sesame Seeds, for garnish
Sweet & Spicy Sauce- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1/2 Tsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Honey or Corn Syrup
- 1 Tsp Garlic Powder (or 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1/2 Tsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Honey or Corn Syrup
- 1 Tsp Garlic Powder (or 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, arrange the 250g of sliced pork belly evenly at the bottom of your rice cooker pot. If the fatty parts are too thick, they can be a bit rich, so slicing them thinly is recommended for a better texture. Lightly season the pork belly with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of black pepper. Select the ‘Reheat’ function on your rice cooker and cook for 9 minutes to sear the pork.
Step 2
While the pork is cooking, let’s prepare the delicious sauce! In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1/2 Tsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp oyster sauce, 1 Tbsp honey (or corn syrup), and 1 Tsp garlic powder (or 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic). Mix thoroughly until smooth. This is a perfect ratio of sweetness and spiciness, creating a sauce that will make you want to eat more rice!
Step 3
After the first 9-minute reheat cycle, open the rice cooker lid and check the underside of the pork belly. Flip the pork belly pieces with a spatula, then select the ‘Reheat’ function again and cook for another 9 minutes. This process helps the pork cook evenly and develop a richer flavor.
Step 4
Prepare the 1/4 onion by slicing it thinly. The onion will add sweetness and a slight crunch as it cooks down with the sauce and pork.
Step 5
Once the second reheat cycle is complete, the bottom side of the pork belly should be nicely browned and golden. While it’s delicious as is, we’ll now mix it with the sauce to create a more complex and satisfying dish.
Step 6
Now, add the prepared sauce and the sliced onion into the rice cooker with the cooked pork. Distribute them evenly over the pork. Close the lid and select the ‘Reheat’ function one more time for 9 minutes. This step allows the sauce to meld beautifully with the pork and vegetables.
Step 7
After the 9-minute reheat, open the rice cooker. While everything is still hot, use a spatula or spoon to thoroughly mix the pork with the sauce, scraping up any bits stuck to the bottom of the pot. If there are any pieces of onion that still look white, stir them in to cook down with the sauce.
Step 8
Transfer the well-mixed Jeyuk Bokkeum to a serving dish. Garnish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds for a final touch. Your delicious meal is now ready to be enjoyed! Serve hot with a bowl of steamed rice.
