Ingredients

  • Short pasta (macaroni, penne, etc.) or long pasta cut to fit rice cooker, 1 cup (approx. 80g)
  • Canned tuna, 1 can (80g), drained
  • Onion, 50g (about 1/4 medium onion)
  • Milk, 150g (about 3/4 cup)
  • Water, 100g (about 1/2 cup)
  • Olive oil, 1.5 Tbsp
  • Fish sauce, 1 Tbsp (or 0.5 tsp salt)
  • Garlic powder, 1 Tbsp (or 1 Tbsp minced garlic)
  • Ginger powder, 0.5 tsp (or ginger powder 0.25 tsp)
  • Vinegar or lemon juice, 1 tsp
  • Italian herb mix (basil, parsley, etc.), a pinch
  • Black pepper, a pinch

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Place the pasta into the rice cooker pot. You can use short pasta shapes like macaroni or penne, or cut long pasta into lengths that fit inside your rice cooker. For a single serving, about one cup (80g) measured in a mug is a good amount.

Step 1

Step 2

Add the olive oil (1.5 Tbsp), fish sauce (1 Tbsp) (or salt 0.5 tsp), garlic powder (1 Tbsp) (or minced garlic 1 Tbsp), ginger powder (0.5 tsp), and the sliced onion (50g) over the pasta. Drizzle the fish sauce for an added umami depth that enhances the pasta’s flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

Pour in the water (100g) and milk (150g), and stir gently to combine everything. Then, select the ‘Multi-Cook’ or ‘Cook’ setting on your rice cooker and set it for 20 minutes. You can use cold milk straight from the refrigerator. If you prefer a creamier and richer taste, use the milk as is. For a lighter flavor, you can substitute the milk with 200ml of water.

Step 3

Step 4

As the pasta cooks, the onion will release its moisture, creating a delicious broth that also acts as a natural sauce base, much like pasta water. The rice cooker’s automatic function ensures the pasta cooks evenly without sticking or burning.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the 20-minute cooking cycle is complete, open the rice cooker and add the drained canned tuna (80g). Sprinkle in your desired amount of Italian herb mix (like basil or parsley) and black pepper. Finally, add the vinegar or lemon juice (1 tsp) and stir everything together gently. The acid from the vinegar or lemon juice effectively cuts through any fishiness from the tuna, resulting in a cleaner and more delicious flavor.

Step 5

Step 6

Gently mix everything to ensure the flavors are well combined. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious tuna onion pasta, conveniently made all in one pot!
