Introducing a Jjajang Tteokbokki recipe made simply with store-bought Jjajang powder. The chewy rice cakes, vegetables, and sausages come together for a delicious snack. It’s perfect as a treat for kids or a quick bite when you’re feeling peckish.
Essential Ingredients- 250g Tteokbokki rice cakes
- 1.5 sheets of square fish cakes
- 5 Vienna sausages
- A small amount of carrot (approx. 30g)
- ½ handful of cabbage (approx. 50g)
- 250ml water (approx. 1 cup)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the main ingredients. Cut the square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3cm in length. Coarsely shred the cabbage and slice the carrot to a similar thickness. Make 2-3 slits on the Vienna sausages to prevent them from bursting when cooked; this will also help them absorb the sauce better.
Step 2
Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes lightly in cold water to prevent them from sticking together. If your rice cakes are hard, soaking them in water for a short while will soften them for cooking.
Step 3
Now, let’s make the Jjajang sauce. Place the 250g of tteokbokki rice cakes in a pot and add 250ml of water. (You can adjust the amount of water based on the type of rice cakes or your desired consistency. Add a little more water if you prefer a thinner sauce.)
Step 4
Add 2.5 Tbsp of Jjajang powder, 0.5 Tbsp of Gochujang, and 2 tsp of sugar to the water. Stir well to dissolve the seasonings before bringing it to a boil. It’s best to dissolve the Jjajang powder beforehand to create a smooth, lump-free sauce.
Step 5
Once the sauce starts to bubble, add all the prepared ingredients: the square fish cakes, cabbage, carrot, and Vienna sausages. Adding all ingredients at once helps to shorten the cooking time, making it convenient.
Step 6
Maintain medium heat and simmer until all ingredients are cooked through. It’s important to cook until the cabbage is tender and the rice cakes have absorbed the sauce. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes.
Step 7
Your delicious Jjajang Tteokbokki is ready when the rice cakes are soft and the sauce has thickened to a rich consistency. Check that the rice cakes have absorbed the flavor well, then turn off the heat.
Step 8
Transfer the finished Jjajang Tteokbokki to a serving dish. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for an extra nutty aroma. It’s incredibly simple to make, and everyone will love this Jjajang Tteokbokki!
