Sausage and Rolled Omelet Kimbap: A Flavorful Picnic Delight
[Picnic Perfection] The Ultimate Sausage and Rolled Omelet Kimbap Recipe
Enjoying the beautiful weekend weather with a lovely picnic? As the season of gatherings approaches, why not pack this perfect picnic kimbap? It’s incredibly simple to make but incredibly popular for its delicious taste and appealing look. Our secret ingredient at Nammang’s is perilla leaves, which add a wonderful aroma, preventing the kimbap from feeling too rich and making it enjoyable even in large quantities. This golden combination recipe, loved by both children and adults, is sure to be a hit!
Ingredients (Makes 4 rolls)- 4 sheets of Gimbap seaweed
- 4 fresh eggs
- 4 plump frankfurter sausages
- 8-10 fresh perilla leaves (깻잎)
- 4 portions of cooked rice (approx. 2 cups)
- 4-5 pinches of salt
- 1/2 – 1 tablespoon sesame oil or perilla oil
- A pinch of toasted sesame seeds
- A little olive oil or avocado oil (for cooking)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the egg mixture. For each egg, add one pinch of salt and whisk gently until well combined and slightly frothy. For a creamier texture, you can add 1 tablespoon of milk to the egg mixture.
Step 2
Slightly blanch the sausages in boiling water for about 1 minute and 30 seconds. This helps to firm them up and also removes any potential chemical additives.
Step 3
Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Add a thin layer of olive oil or avocado oil, tilting the pan to ensure the oil coats the surface evenly. Once the oil is shimmering, reduce the heat to low. Pour about 1/4 of the egg mixture into the pan, spreading it thinly and evenly with a ladle.
Step 4
Before the top of the egg layer sets, quickly place a blanched sausage onto the egg. Once the bottom begins to cook, carefully roll the egg mixture around the sausage using chopsticks or a spatula. The sausage acts as a sturdy core, making it easy even for beginners to create a beautiful rolled omelet.
Step 5
There are two ways to incorporate the wonderful aroma of perilla leaves: Option 1: Prepare the rolled omelet plain (without perilla inside). When assembling the kimbap, place the perilla leaves directly on the rice before adding other ingredients. This preserves their crisp texture and fresh scent. Option 2: As shown in the photo, you can thinly slice the perilla leaves and roll them together with the sausage and egg. This infuses the kimbap with a richer, more complex flavor profile. Choose the method that best suits your preference!
Step 6
Use the gimbap seaweed sheets as they are, as they are usually pre-toasted. If using plain seaweed, lightly toast it on a dry pan. When placing the seaweed on your cutting board, position it with the rough side facing up. This allows the smoother side to be the exterior of the kimbap, while the rough side grips the fillings better.
Step 7
In a bowl, mix the cooked rice with toasted sesame seeds and sesame oil (or perilla oil). Spread the seasoned rice thinly and evenly over about two-thirds of the seaweed sheet, leaving a small margin at the top edge.
Step 8
On top of the rice, layer the perilla leaves, followed by the sausage and rolled omelet. Starting from the edge closest to you, carefully and tightly roll the kimbap using a bamboo mat or your hands, ensuring all the ingredients are enclosed.
Step 9
Here’s a handy tip for perfect kimbap: Layer 2-3 perilla leaves, cut to the length of your rolled omelet, directly on top of the rice. Placing the rough side of the perilla leaves facing upwards helps to prevent gaps between the rice and the rolled omelet, resulting in a beautifully neat roll.
Step 10
Once rolled, place the kimbap seam-side down on the cutting board and let it rest for a few minutes. This helps the seam seal and prevents the kimbap from unraveling. Lightly brush the top of the kimbap with sesame oil or perilla oil. For cleaner cuts, also lightly coat your knife with oil. This ensures the cross-section looks neat and appetizing.
Step 11
Voila! Your delicious Sausage and Rolled Omelet Kimbap is ready. The presentation is so charming, you might pause for a moment before diving in! Enjoy your delightful picnic!
