Main Ingredients
- 1 basket of Shishito peppers (approx. 200-250g)
- 1/2 can of Spam (approx. 200g)
- A little all-purpose flour or tempura flour (for coating Spam)
Seasoning Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp Cooking oil (for stir-frying)
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp Water
- 1/2 Tbsp Minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp Corn syrup or Oligosaccharide
- 1.5 Tbsp Sesame oil
- A pinch of Sesame seeds (for garnish)
- 2 Tbsp Cooking oil (for stir-frying)
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp Water
- 1/2 Tbsp Minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp Corn syrup or Oligosaccharide
- 1.5 Tbsp Sesame oil
- A pinch of Sesame seeds (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all the ingredients to make the delicious Spam and Shishito Pepper Stir-fry. Having them washed and trimmed will make the cooking process much smoother.
Step 2
First, cleanly remove the stems from the shishito peppers. Then, thoroughly pat them dry and cut them in half or into 2-3 pieces, depending on your preference for bite-size. Be careful not to cut them too small, as they might get mushy when stir-fried.
Step 3
Take the Spam out of the can and slice it into approximately 0.5cm thick, flat pieces. If the Spam slices are too thick, they might take a longer time to cook.
Step 4
Heat a pan over medium-low heat without any oil. First, stir-fry the shishito peppers. This helps to evaporate their moisture, ensuring a crispier texture when stir-fried. Stir-frying for about 5 minutes is sufficient.
Step 5
Transfer the stir-fried shishito peppers to another bowl. Arrange the Spam slices in a single layer. Sprinkle a thin, even layer of flour (or tempura flour) over the Spam. Using a sieve will help distribute the flour evenly without clumps. After sprinkling, gently toss the Spam to ensure the flour coats all sides.
Step 6
Wipe the pan used for the shishito peppers or use a clean pan. Add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil and preheat over medium-high heat. Add the flour-coated Spam and pan-fry until golden brown. Flip the Spam pieces as needed to ensure they cook evenly and develop a nice color.
Step 7
Once the Spam is golden brown, add the stir-fried shishito peppers back into the pan. Stir-fry them together quickly over high heat to maintain the crispness of the ingredients.
Step 8
Now it’s time to add the seasonings. Add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 3 tablespoons of water, and 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic. Stir well to coat all the ingredients evenly and continue to stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes until a delicious aroma fills the air.
Step 9
Before turning off the heat, complete the final steps. Add 2 tablespoons of corn syrup (or oligosaccharide) for a glossy finish and 1.5 tablespoons of sesame oil for a rich, nutty flavor.
