Main Ingredients

  • 4 sheets of square fish cakes (Odeng)
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1/3 bell pepper (use a variety of colors for visual appeal)
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 2.5 Tbsp soy sauce (jin-ganjang)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1.5 Tbsp corn syrup (oligo-dang)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, cut the 4 sheets of square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm wide. Slice the 1/2 onion and 1/3 bell pepper into similar-sized strips. Cut the 1/2 green onion stalk diagonally. (Using various colored bell peppers will make the dish more visually appealing.)

Step 1

Step 2

In a pot or deep pan, bring plenty of water to a boil. Once boiling, add the cut fish cakes and blanch them for just about 15 seconds. This helps remove any impurities and ensures a softer texture.

Step 2

Step 3

Drain the blanched fish cakes lightly, then heat 1 Tbsp of sesame oil and 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan. Stir-fry the fish cakes. (Tip: Reserve 2-3 Tbsp of the blanching water to add back to the pan; this helps maintain moistness.)

Step 3

Step 4

Stir-fry the fish cakes for about 10 seconds, then add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant. Once the garlic aroma develops, add the sliced bell pepper and onion. Stir-fry until the vegetables become slightly translucent. It’s best to stir-fry quickly over high heat to prevent the vegetables from becoming too mushy.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the vegetables are partially cooked, add 2.5 Tbsp of soy sauce and 1 Tbsp of sugar. Stir well to combine and continue stir-frying. When the onions begin to turn slightly translucent, move to the next step.

Step 5

Step 6

Add the diagonally sliced green onions and stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes. This allows the sweetness and aroma of the green onions to meld with the fish cakes.

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, add 1.5 Tbsp of corn syrup and stir-fry quickly until a glossy sheen develops. Turn off the heat, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and your delicious Odeng Bokkeum is complete!
