Main Ingredients

  • 4-5 sheets of square fish cakes (Eomuk)
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion
  • 1 Korean chili pepper (optional, for a spicier kick)

Seasoning & Cooking Oil

  • 2-3 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce (regular or seasoned)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • A little water (approx. 3-4 Tbsp)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Heat 2-3 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and stir-fry until lightly golden brown and fragrant, being careful not to burn it. This step infuses the oil with garlic aroma.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the garlic starts to turn golden, add the fish cakes, cut into bite-sized pieces, and stir-fry them together. Stir-frying quickly will help the fish cakes retain a wonderfully chewy texture and prevent sticking.

Step 2

Step 3

When the fish cakes are somewhat cooked, add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Then, pour in about 3-4 tablespoons of water, just enough to partially cover the ingredients (about 1/3 of their height). Stir and cook over medium heat until the sauce thickens and coats the fish cakes.

Step 3

Step 4

Finally, add the green onion, sliced diagonally, and the Korean chili pepper (if using). Stir-fry for another minute until the green onion is slightly wilted. Turn off the heat and serve your delicious Eomuk Bokkeum! If you enjoy spicy food, be sure to include the chili pepper.
