Main Ingredients- 1.5 bowls of warm cooked rice
- 100g ground beef
- 1/3 medium onion
- 1/4 carrot
- 1/2 green bell pepper
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- Salt to taste
- 1 sheet of Gim (roasted seaweed for kimbap)
Beef Marinade- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1/2 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon mirin (cooking wine)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1/2 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon mirin (cooking wine)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by preparing the vegetables for your rice balls. Thoroughly wash and pat dry the green bell pepper, carrot, and onion. Finely mince them into small, uniform pieces. This ensures they blend well with the rice and create a pleasant texture.
Step 2
Next, let’s marinate the ground beef. In a bowl, combine the ground beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1/2 tablespoon sugar, and 1 tablespoon mirin. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined. This step helps to eliminate any gamey odors from the beef and enhances its savory flavor. Let the beef marinate for a few minutes.
Step 3
Now, let’s start stir-frying. Lightly oil a pan over medium heat. Add the minced carrots first, as they take slightly longer to cook. Sprinkle a pinch of salt while stir-frying to bring out their natural sweetness and improve texture. Cook until the carrots are slightly tender.
Step 4
Once the carrots are partially cooked, add the minced onion and green bell pepper to the pan. Continue to stir-fry them together with the carrots. Season with a little more salt. Stir-fry over medium-high heat until the vegetables are tender yet still retain a slight crispness.
Step 5
Transfer the stir-fried vegetables to a separate bowl and allow them to cool slightly. This prevents them from becoming mushy when mixed with the rice and helps preserve their vibrant colors.
Step 6
It’s time to combine everything. In a large bowl, add the warm cooked rice, the marinated and cooked ground beef, and the cooled stir-fried vegetables. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Gently mix all the ingredients together with your hands, being careful not to mash the rice grains. Ensure everything is evenly distributed.
Step 7
Finally, shape the rice mixture into small, bite-sized balls. For a decorative touch, you can thinly slice the Gim (seaweed sheet) and wrap it around the rice balls. Arrange them in a bento box or container, and they’re ready for your picnic!
