Main Ingredients

  • 2 medium potatoes
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1 cheongyang chili pepper (optional, for spice)
  • 1 cup water (approx. 200ml)

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 5 Tbsp soy sauce (approx. 50ml)
  • 2 Tbsp sugar (approx. 20g)
  • 1 Tbsp chopped green onion (approx. 10g)
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic (approx. 5g)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil (approx. 5ml)
  • 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds (approx. 2g)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the main ingredients. Peel the potatoes and cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 2cm cubes. Slice the onion into similar-sized pieces. Finely chop the cheongyang chili pepper to add a spicy kick. (You can omit this if you don’t like spicy food.)

Step 1

Step 2

In a bowl, combine all the seasoning ingredients: soy sauce, sugar, chopped green onion, minced garlic, sesame oil, and toasted sesame seeds. Mix them well with a spoon to create a flavorful sauce. This blend will create a harmonious taste.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s start cooking! Lightly grease a heated pot with a little cooking oil. Add the cut potatoes and stir-fry them over medium heat, being careful not to burn them. Sauté until the edges of the potatoes become slightly translucent, which will help them absorb the sauce better.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the potatoes start to turn translucent, add the sliced onions, the prepared seasoning sauce, and 1 cup of water to the pot. Cook over medium heat, rather than high heat, allowing the liquid to reduce until it coats the potatoes and onions. Stir gently occasionally to prevent the potatoes from breaking apart.

Step 4

Step 5

As the sauce thickens, we’re in the final stage! Add the finely chopped cheongyang chili pepper and continue to cook over medium heat for about 1-2 more minutes until the delicious braised onions and potatoes are perfectly done. The spiciness of the chili pepper cuts through the richness, making it even more delicious. Serve this delightful dish with warm rice!
