Fish cakes and tofu have a surprisingly great combination! This dish is simple yet satisfying, perfect for a meal that will make you crave more rice. Enjoy a hearty meal with this fish cake and tofu stew, packed with vegetables for added nutrition.
Main Ingredients- 2 cups water (standard paper cup)
- 1 pack fish cakes (square type)
- 1 block firm tofu (recommended for frying)
- 2 medium onions
- 1/2 stalk green onion
- 1 green chili pepper
- 1 red chili pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare all your ingredients. Slice the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm wide). Cut the tofu into 1.5 cm thick slices and pat them dry with paper towels. Slice the onions thinly, and diagonally slice the green onions and chili peppers. Prepare them so they can be evenly spread at the bottom of the pot.
Step 2
Heat 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil (or cooking oil) in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the prepared tofu slices and pan-fry them until golden brown on both sides. Frying the tofu beforehand will prevent it from breaking apart during stewing and enhance its flavor. Set the fried tofu aside on a plate.
Step 3
In the same pan, add the fish cakes and stir-fry them for about 1-2 minutes. This step helps to remove excess oil from the fish cakes and adds more flavor.
Step 4
Now, in the pot you’ll be using for stewing, spread the stir-fried fish cakes and sliced onions evenly at the bottom. Arrange the golden-brown fried tofu attractively on top.

Prepare the seasoning sauce by mixing 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2.5 Tbsp gochugaru, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 1/2 Tbsp plum extract, 1 Tbsp kanari aekjeot, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil in a small bowl. Pour this seasoning sauce over the ingredients in the pot. Add 2 cups of water. Finally, arrange the sliced green onions and chili peppers attractively on top.
Step 6
Place the pot over high heat and bring it to a boil. Once it’s boiling vigorously, reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly. Be careful not to over-reduce, as it can become too salty. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Step 7
Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds as desired. Your delicious fish cake and tofu stew is ready to be enjoyed! Serve hot with freshly cooked rice.
