Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 1 block of firm tofu. Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes, about 2cm on each side. Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil and 2 Tbsp of perilla oil (or sesame oil) in a pan over medium heat.
Step 2
Add the cubed tofu to the pan and pan-fry until golden brown on all sides. This step is key to achieving a delicious, chewy texture for the tofu. Continue frying until the tofu pieces are beautifully golden brown.
Step 3
Once the tofu is nicely browned, peel and thinly slice the 3 medium onions. Add the sliced onions to the pan with the fried tofu and begin to stir-fry them together.
Step 4
Now it’s time to add the flavorful seasonings. Pour in 2 Tbsp of soy sauce and 2 Tbsp of oyster sauce. These will provide a deep, savory base for the dish.
Step 5
Add 1 Tbsp of gochujang for a touch of spicy sweetness and 1 Tbsp of gochugaru for extra heat. If you prefer a spicier flavor, feel free to increase the gochugaru to 2 Tbsp.
Step 6
For sweetness and a glossy finish, add 1 Tbsp of sugar (you can reduce this to 1/2 Tbsp if you prefer less sweetness), 1 Tbsp of corn syrup (or other liquid sweetener), and 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for aroma. Stir in 1 Tbsp of minced garlic to enhance the flavor. Finally, add 1/2 cup (approx. 100ml) of water to help the seasonings blend well.
Step 7
Finely chop the scallions or the white parts of the green onions and sprinkle them over the pan. Finish by scattering 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds for a nutty aroma and visual appeal. Turn off the heat immediately after adding all the ingredients.
Step 8
Gently toss everything together to ensure the sliced onions, chewy tofu, and savory sauce are well combined. Your delicious onion and tofu stir-fry is now ready!
Step 9
Spoon a generous portion of the prepared onion and tofu stir-fry over a bowl of hot, steamed rice.
Step 10
The sweet onions, chewy tofu, and the perfectly balanced spicy, sweet, and savory sauce create an irresistible topping for rice, turning it into a wonderfully satisfying one-bowl meal. Every grain of rice will be coated in the delicious sauce.
