Main Ingredients- Bacon 205g (adjust to your preference)
- Onions 2 medium-large
- Water 1 rice cup (approx. 180ml)
Seasoning- Soy sauce 5 Tbsp (brewing soy sauce or regular soy sauce)
- Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 2 Tbsp (adjust spice level)
- Sesame oil 2 Tbsp (for nutty aroma)
- Oligodang (corn syrup) 1 tsp (or sugar, adjust sweetness)
- Soy sauce 5 Tbsp (brewing soy sauce or regular soy sauce)
- Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 2 Tbsp (adjust spice level)
- Sesame oil 2 Tbsp (for nutty aroma)
- Oligodang (corn syrup) 1 tsp (or sugar, adjust sweetness)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the bacon. Lightly rinse the bacon under running water, then pat it dry with paper towels. Cut it into approximately 3 equal pieces. This prevents the bacon from sticking together and ensures even cooking in the pan.
Step 2
Wash and peel the onions. Prepare 2 medium-large onions. Slice them thickly, about 0.5cm wide, so they retain a pleasant texture when cooked.
Step 3
Let’s make the key seasoning sauce in advance. In a small bowl, combine 5 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp sesame oil, and 1 tsp oligodang. Mix them well until evenly combined. You can use sugar instead of oligodang or adjust the sweetness to your liking.
Step 4
Once all ingredients are ready, let’s start cooking. Place the prepared bacon in a preheated frying pan and cook over medium heat. Cook until the bacon is golden brown and has rendered some of its fat.
Step 5
Transfer the well-cooked bacon to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess grease. This will help reduce the greasiness of the rice bowl and offer a cleaner taste.
Step 6
Using the same pan where you cooked the bacon, add the sliced onions and stir-fry over medium-low heat. The bacon drippings infused in the pan will add a deeper flavor to the onions. (If you wish to add minced garlic, stir-fry it now with the onions.)
Step 7
Continue to sauté the onions until they become translucent and their edges start to turn golden brown, releasing a sweet aroma. This process maximizes the natural sweetness of the onions.
Step 8
Once the onions are sufficiently sautéed, pour in all the prepared sauce and quickly stir-fry with the onions. Be mindful of the heat to prevent the sauce from burning, stir-frying briskly.
Step 9
When the onions are evenly coated with the sauce, add the cooked bacon back into the pan and mix. Finally, pour in 1 rice cup of water (about 180ml). This water will help create a moist sauce that mixes well with rice as it simmers.
Step 10
Simmer over medium heat until the sauce is slightly reduced and has a gravy-like consistency. If the sauce is too thin, it might taste bland, so reducing it to your desired thickness is key. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more soy sauce for saltiness or oligodang for sweetness. Once done, turn off the heat and serve immediately by placing the rice in a bowl and topping it with the cooked onion bacon mixture.
Step 11
The Onion Bacon Rice Bowl is best enjoyed with a little bit of sauce remaining, which makes it easier to mix with the rice and enhances the overall flavor. Ladle generously over warm rice and savor.
Step 12
Finally, sprinkle some sesame seeds on top for a nutty aroma and an even more appetizing appearance! Enjoy a delightful mealtime with this rice bowl that both kids and adults will love!
