Key Ingredients- Radish 450g (approx. 1/3 medium)
- Green Onion 1/2 stalk
- Cooking Oil 1 Tbsp
- Perilla Oil 1.5 Tbsp
- Minced Garlic 1 Tbsp
- Salt 1/3 Tbsp (or Soy Sauce)
- Ground Perilla Seeds 1/3 cup (approx. 30g)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the ingredients for our delicious perilla seed radish stir-fry. You will need 450g of radish, 1/2 stalk of green onion, 1 Tbsp cooking oil, 1.5 Tbsp perilla oil, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1/3 Tbsp salt, and 1/3 cup ground perilla seeds. (Tablespoon measurements)
Step 2
Wash the radish thoroughly, peel it, and then slice it into strips about 0.5cm thick. Slicing them to a moderate thickness will prevent them from becoming too mushy when cooked.
Step 3
Finely chop the green onion, including both the white and green parts, to add a fragrant aroma to the dish.
Step 4
Now, let’s get cooking! Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add 1 Tbsp of cooking oil and 1.5 Tbsp of nutty perilla oil.
Step 5
Once the oils are warm, add the chopped green onions and stir-fry until fragrant, creating a delicious green onion oil. Be careful not to burn them. When the aroma of the green onions intensifies, add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and stir-fry together until fragrant (about 30 seconds).
Step 6
Add the julienned radish to the pan. Use a spatula or chopsticks to gently toss and mix the radish, ensuring it’s evenly coated with the minced garlic and oils. This allows the radish to absorb the flavors.
Step 7
Now, increase the heat to high and stir-fry the radish for about 1 minute and 30 seconds. This quick stir-fry helps the radish become slightly translucent while retaining a pleasant texture.
Step 8
Pour in 120ml (about 1/2 cup) of water. Cover the pan with a lid that allows steam to escape (like a lid with a vent or slightly ajar). Reduce the heat to medium and let the radish cook until tender. This step should take approximately 8 to 9 minutes.
Step 9
The cooking time can be adjusted based on your preference for radish texture. I cooked mine for about 8 minutes to maintain a slight crispness. If you prefer a softer, more tender radish, feel free to cook for an additional 10 minutes.
Step 10
Once the radish is cooked to your liking, season with 1/3 Tbsp of salt. (A splash of soy sauce can also add a nice savory depth.)
Step 11
Now for the star ingredient! Generously add 1/3 cup of ground perilla seeds. The nutty flavor of the perilla seeds will elevate the taste of the radish stir-fry significantly.
Step 12
After adding the perilla seeds, continue to stir-fry for about 40 seconds, allowing all the ingredients to combine well. You can also add a pinch of black pepper for extra flavor if desired.
Step 13
Finally, sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on top. Your delicious and savory perilla seed radish stir-fry is ready! Enjoy this simple yet deeply flavorful side dish that even picky eaters will love.
