Main Ingredients

  • 1 bundle dried seaweed (approx. 10-15g)
  • 900ml water (approx. 4.5 cups)
  • 3 tablespoons perilla seed powder (generous amount)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, soak the dried seaweed in cold water for about 20 minutes. Once the seaweed is fully rehydrated, rinse it 2-3 times under clean water to remove excess salt. Squeeze out any excess water and cut it into bite-sized pieces. (Tip: Avoid soaking for too long, as it can become slimy. Adjust soaking time as needed.)

Step 1

Step 2

Heat a pot over medium-low heat. Add the prepared seaweed and 2 tablespoons of perilla oil. Stir-fry the seaweed for about 2-3 minutes. This step helps to eliminate any fishy smell from the seaweed and adds a nutty aroma.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the seaweed is sufficiently stir-fried, pour in 900ml of water and bring it to a boil over high heat. Wait until the soup starts to boil.

Step 3

Step 4

When the water comes to a rolling boil, reduce the heat to medium and add 2 tablespoons of soup soy sauce to season. (Tip: Adjust the amount of soup soy sauce based on its saltiness.)

Step 4

Step 5

Next, add 1 tablespoon of anchovy extract for an extra layer of umami. If you don’t have anchovy extract, you can substitute it with fish sauce.

Step 5

Step 6

Now it’s time to add the star ingredient for richness: perilla seed powder. Spoon in about 3 heaping tablespoons. Stir well to ensure the nutty aroma of the perilla seeds disperses throughout the broth.

Step 6

Step 7

Once all the seasonings are well combined, cover the pot again and let it simmer gently over low heat for another 5-10 minutes. It’s important to let the flavors of the seaweed and perilla seeds meld fully into the broth.

Step 7

Step 8

Ladle the thoroughly simmered perilla seed seaweed soup into bowls to serve. The perilla seed powder creates a thicker, more savory broth, beautifully complemented by the tender seaweed for a deep and rich flavor experience. Enjoy this hearty and nutritious meal with a bowl of warm rice!
