Ingredients

  • Somen or medium noodles, for 2 servings
  • Sesame oil, 3-4 Tbsp
  • Seasoned gim (seaweed), 3-4 packets
  • Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish (sprinkle)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, bring a generous amount of water to a boil in a pot for cooking 2 servings of somen or medium noodles. The type of noodle isn’t critical, but medium noodles offer a nice chewiness if you prefer.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the water is rapidly boiling, add the 2 servings of noodles. (Note: ‘2 servings’ here generally means a larger portion, suitable for those who enjoy a hearty meal.)

Step 2

Step 3

As soon as you add the noodles, gently stir them with chopsticks or tongs to prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning. Ensure they are fully submerged in the boiling water.

Step 3

Step 4

While the noodles are cooking, when the water starts to boil over, add about half a cup of cold water. Repeat this process 2-3 times. Adding cold water each time the water boils up helps the noodles become firmer and chewier.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, when the water boils up one last time, immediately turn off the heat. Drain the cooked noodles in a colander. Then, rinse the noodles quickly under cold running water to wash away excess starch. This step ensures the noodles don’t stick together and maintain a clean texture.

Step 5

Step 6

Transfer the well-rinsed noodles into a serving bowl. Drizzle generously with 3-4 tablespoons of sesame oil. The amount of sesame oil can be adjusted to your personal preference.

Step 6

Step 7

Now it’s time to add the delicious seasoned gim. Tear or cut the gim into bite-sized pieces and scatter them over the noodles. The umami and aroma from the gim will beautifully complement the rich sesame oil, creating a fantastic flavor combination.

Step 7

Step 8

For the final touch, sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds for extra nutty flavor (optional). For decoration, I used the green part of a scallion instead of chives; it’s fine to omit this if you don’t have it. I used a total of 4 packets of seasoned gim: 3 packets were mixed in with the noodles, and 1 packet was carefully arranged around the edge of the bowl to maintain its shape and visual appeal. And there you have it – your delicious and savory Sesame Oil Gim Noodles are ready to be enjoyed!
