How to Make Soy-Glazed Pan-Fried Onions: Chef Baek Jong-won’s Easy Recipe
Let’s make delicious pan-fried onions with a delightful sweetness and chewy texture.
Ingredients
- 3 Onions (medium-sized)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1/2 tsp Sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Today, we’re going to make ‘Soy-Glazed Pan-Fried Onions,’ a super simple recipe inspired by Chef Baek Jong-won. This dish is perfectly sweet and savory, making it an excellent side dish for rice or a lunchbox addition!
Step 2
First, prepare the onions. Peel the onions, wash them thoroughly under running water, and trim the ends. Slice them into uniform strips about 0.5 cm thick. No need for soaking or salting.
Step 3
Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a little cooking oil. Add 1 tsp of minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. You want a gentle garlic aroma to fill your kitchen.
Step 4
Once the garlic is fragrant, add all the sliced onions to the pan. Stir-fry them together. Cooking over medium-low heat, rather than high heat, will ensure the onions cook gently without burning.
Step 5
As the onions start to turn translucent, pour 2 Tbsp of soy sauce around the edges of the pan. This allows the soy sauce to caramelize slightly, adding depth of flavor. Finally, drizzle in 1 tsp of sesame oil and continue to stir-fry.
Step 6
Stir everything together and cook for just another 1-2 minutes until the onions are tender and coated. The sweetness of the onions and the saltiness of the soy sauce will create a wonderful flavor. The sugar is added minimally to enhance the onion’s natural sweetness; feel free to omit it if you prefer. Sprinkle with 1 tsp of toasted sesame seeds for an extra nutty aroma. This dish is incredibly delicious served over warm rice!
