Main Ingredients
  • 1 can (200g) Spam
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 stalk green onion or scallion
  • 1 bowl cooked rice, warm

Spam Glaze Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp mirin (rice wine)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp water
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Open the can of Spam and slice it thinly, about 0.5 cm thick. Slicing it too thick might prevent the glaze from penetrating fully. Thinner slices also provide a better texture.

Step 2

Wash and finely chop the green onion or scallion. The white parts can be used during cooking, and the green parts can be used as a garnish at the end for added color and aroma.

Step 3

In a small bowl, combine 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp mirin, and 1 Tbsp sugar. Add 3 Tbsp water and stir well until the sugar is dissolved to create the glaze. Set aside the sesame oil for later.

Step 4

Carefully separate the yolk from the egg white. Lightly grease a non-stick pan with oil over medium heat, then add only the egg white. Scramble it until cooked through, then remove it to a separate plate.

Step 5

Place the sliced Spam in the same pan and pan-fry over medium-low heat until golden brown on both sides. Spam releases its own fat, so you likely won’t need to add extra oil. Browning enhances its flavor significantly.

Step 6

Push the browned Spam to one side of the pan. Pour the prepared glaze into the empty part of the pan and let it come to a simmer. Once simmering, add the chopped green onion (mostly the white parts) and let it simmer with the Spam for 1-2 minutes, allowing the Spam to absorb the glaze.

Step 7

Spoon the warm rice into a serving bowl. Arrange the scrambled egg whites attractively on top of the rice.

Step 8

Generously top the rice and egg whites with the glazed Spam. Finally, place the egg yolk in the center and drizzle 1 Tbsp of sesame oil over everything. Your delicious Spam Teriyaki Bowl is ready to enjoy! A sprinkle of the reserved green parts of the green onion adds a nice touch.
