Main Ingredients
- 2 pcs cleaned cuttlefish
- 10 pcs shrimp
- 1/4 Korean zucchini (aebang)
- 1/2 onion
- 2 red chili peppers
- 2 green chili peppers
- 1/2 green onion
- 2 Tbsp doenjang (fermented soybean paste)
- 1 Tbsp gochujang (red chili paste)
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp cooking wine or ginger wine
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s start with preparing the ingredients for our flavorful seafood ssamjang!
Step 2
– Finely chop all the vegetables. Instead of mincing them too finely, chop them to a size that allows for a pleasant bite. (Tip: The smaller the vegetables are chopped, the smoother the ssamjang will mix.)
– Cut the cleaned cuttlefish and shrimp into pieces about twice the size of the chopped vegetables.
Step 3
– Heat a pan over medium-low heat with a little cooking oil. Add the minced garlic and chopped green onion, and sauté until the fragrant aroma of garlic and onion is released.
Step 4
– Once the garlic starts to turn golden brown, add the cuttlefish, shrimp, and cooking wine (or ginger wine). Increase the heat to high and stir-fry quickly. It’s important to preserve the fresh flavor of the seafood!
Step 5
– When the shrimp turn a nice reddish color, add the prepared chopped Korean zucchini, onion, red chili peppers, and green chili peppers. Stir-fry together with 2 Tbsp of doenjang, ensuring it mixes well with the ingredients.
Step 6
– After adding the doenjang, stir in 1 Tbsp of gochujang and continue to stir-fry until everything is well combined. Gochujang adds a deeper, spicier flavor.
Step 7
– Once the vegetables are tender, add 1/2 Tbsp of sugar and mix well. (Tip: Sugar enhances the umami flavor of the ssamjang and balances the saltiness. Since the saltiness of doenjang and gochujang can vary by brand, be sure to taste and adjust the sugar amount as needed!)
Step 8
– When the sugar has completely melted and is evenly incorporated into the ssamjang, sprinkle 1 Tbsp of sesame seeds on top for added nuttiness and give it a final gentle stir to finish.
Step 9
Your delicious seafood ssamjang is complete! Enjoy using it in various dishes.
