Ingredients
  • 1 bowl of warm rice
  • 2 Tbsp stir-fried anchovies (for baby anchovies, remove bones and heads)
  • 15-20g pickled radish (danmuji)
  • A little bit of shredded seaweed (gimjaban)
  • 1 Tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the pickled radish. For slightly firm pickled radish, it’s good to rinse it lightly under running water to remove some of the additives. Squeeze out the water thoroughly, then finely chop it into pieces smaller than rice grains to use as an ingredient for the rice balls. This will help it mix well with the rice and add a pleasant texture.

Step 2

Apart from finely chopping the pickled radish, there’s really nothing else to do for these super simple baby food rice balls. They are perfect not only for babies but also as a side dish for adult lunch boxes! Have your delicious shredded seaweed, stir-fried anchovies, and a bowl of warm rice ready.

Step 3

Place the prepared rice in a large bowl. Add the chopped pickled radish, stir-fried anchovies, and shredded seaweed. The rice should be neither too hot nor too cold; slightly cooled rice clumps together best. If using cold rice, warm it slightly in the microwave and let it cool down. If using hot rice, let it cool down a bit after fluffing. Since we’ll be seasoning with mayonnaise, don’t add too much shredded seaweed. If you’re skipping the mayonnaise, feel free to add a more generous amount.

Step 4

Now, add the mayonnaise to enhance the flavor. Mayonnaise helps bind the ingredients softly and adds a savory richness. For baby rice balls, you might use a little less mayonnaise or omit it altogether.

Step 5

Finally, add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for a fragrant touch. Mix all the ingredients gently with your hands until well combined.

Step 6

Once all ingredients are evenly mixed, simply shape them into bite-sized balls with your hands. They will hold together well even with just sesame oil if you omit the mayonnaise, so don’t worry! Enjoy these nutritious and simple baby rice balls, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal!
